Ronald. There's no such name as Roald.

But Terry Pratchett accepted one and proceeded to make a sword out of meteoric iron to go with it.

That act colors this whole list. Whatever reasons they had, they missed 100% of the shot they didn't take.

Shouldn't the names of ALL citizens of the U.S.A. be on that list?

author Roald Dahl

Well that's just peachy. What a twit. He didn't want the marvelous medicine?

Ken Brannagh was also offered a CBE, which he declined because he was Irish, or something.

They can knight foreign citizens, and have several orders for that purpose. On the US end, the knighthood stops having any meaning once you cross the border into American territory.

And if mean that statement in the sense that all Americans should refuse knighthood outright on principle, well that's just like, your opinion, man.

I find it a comforting thing to think that not EVERYONE on planet Earth insist on being a 15 minute of Fame Attention Whore...

I have found it profoundly disturbing on a daily basis the phenomenon of this and the pop culture focus on it, as evidenced all around us by what has become common and ordinary; people in the crowds in the early A.M. in the background of the Today show waving signs and acting like idiots in general...even middle age folks act like teenage girls at a Bieber concert. And speaking of. THE epidemic of teenage girls in particular placarding their half naked images all over websites and chronically encouraged by media images to be hypersexual and objectified. Sports fans body painted up and taking their literal 'fanatacism' to extremes all too often where they get drunk and rowdy, and sometimes...kill people over the twisted tribalism and fraternity they seem to find identifying with a sports team. Not to mention a liitle property damage and/rioting if their team loses. (or hell...even if their team WINS). Ever seen the sea of desperation at a casting call tryout for American Idol and such shows? Pride, dignity and self respect are flipped off like a switch. Anything to get on camera and identify with others who are famous.

Myself...I could think of 100 people I would rather meet before the Queen or any other royalty. Really speaking for myself, can't imagine few who I would be totally not interested in to meet as much as an 'honour' from such gentry.

Just think, if Bob Hope kept his British citizenship, he would be Sir Bob Hope, now.

The greatest tragedy of Roald Dahl's life is that his father was too pissed to spell Ronald on the birth registration.

/true story.

Sheesh, a lot of stuck-up types, mostly. Your government says "Hey, nice job, have a little title and a nice medal." It's not like they expect you to go out and start smacking commoners over the head with a riding whip. The Empire has been gone a long time, they really shouldn't get all pissy over the name of an award. It's not like it's the Order of Fuzzy Wuzzy Bashing.

Would you accept an award from a group who holds positions you disagree with? Would you accept one from a group with an unsavory history?

Remember that the real reason for these awards was to tie the organization giving them to the person receiving them. It's why you will often see dictators attempt to be seen or imply an endorsement from popular figures.

Hell, look at the 'flashpoint' in Les Miserables. It was the French government giving a full honor state funeral to one of the opposition members. In giving the deceased champion a state funeral they were trying to claim his honor for their own.

If you reach the point where you are in consideration for a knighthood, you should understand that you have already earned it, and should consider the motives of the government who really wants to be able to say, 'Look at this fine example of OUR citizens that WE have produced'

You are all idiots. The Dahl family emigrated from Norway to Wales and Roald was raised in Wales. Roald is a real Norse name.

I'm wondering why someone would spend 15 months to trying to get that list released. So what if (name here) turned down honors from the Queen. Why should any British citizen care?

Wrong. They lived in the Achterhuis attic while Annie Sullivan taught little Roald how to see, hear and speak.
