Great, now the computers at NORAD are gonna try to launch all of our nuclear missiles.

"All their grades magically came out to 90," the lowest total for an A, he said.

Is it wrong that I'm impressed that they worked out the arithmetic to figure out just how much they needed to adjust their grades to end up with an A? Applied learning!

The teens attached devices called "keyloggers" to the USB connectors on the computers. Like skimming devices attached to automated teller machines that steal customer information at banks, the keylogger recorded teachers' user names and passwords as they typed on their keyboards.

A "device" called a "keylogger" attached to a "USB connector"? Or a keylogging program on a USB stick (that somehow nobody noticed)?

/that's a real question, since I find myself falling further and further behind the technology curve
//in my day, we had to look at the password on the sticky note under the mousepad in the main office

Once again they get caught because somebody told, because criminals can never keep their mouths shut.

As for the, "somehow nobody noticed." How often do you take a look at the ports on the back of your computer?

Thanks, and good point. I somehow thought they were dumb enough to put it in one of the front ports.

/leave me alone, it's morning

You're right, it was probably just a USB stick that went unnoticed. Which really isn't hard, most teachers I've seen have their PC's under their desk, and know enough about them to not touch them.

/I had to move my wifes when the school moved her from one room to another, and I'd say that the IT staff at the school board knows less then some of the teachers.
//Hopefully they'll accept my application, they need help.

If they put as much effort into studying as they did cheating, they would have passed with flying colors.

Well, at the very least they should have a security software that would detect that there's a key logger running. The fact that there wasn't one in place is the scary part.

And how would the system know there's a key logger connected?

That would only detect software-based logging programs - externally attached hardware-based loggers such as these are completely invisible to the system. They just monitor and record keystroke signals as they pass through...

I grade papers for one of my professor's 101 courses. There are about 250 students, so cheating is rampant, but nobody is as bad as this small group of Asian students. They all sit clustered together near the center of the room and copy each other. To deal with the issue, after a couple of quizzes, we switched over to using several different variations of the quiz. The reactions and outright panic when they got back tests with scores of around 30% made my whole day.

So I guess I'm saying the stereotype doesn't always hold water.

Sounds pretty clever except they expanded the circle of trust....and starting charging other students. That's when it got dumb.

I just wonder if any of the teachers had the password "123456" or "password"

I've always thought... If people like this put their intelligence and effort into actual work instead of trying to beat the system, they would be far batter off...
It really is absurd when you think about it.

Cloudchaser Sakonige the Red Wolf: If they put as much effort into studying as they did cheating, they would have passed with flying colors.

I knew a guy in college that spent most of his time drinking and not doing any school work(shocking, I know). When finals rolled around, he sneaked off to the teachers offices at night(they all had outside windows) with a pair of binoculars and a flashlight to try to see if he could score some test answers. I don't recall seeing him at school the following semester.

I think everyone told him pretty much the same thing you said.

I love how they always say "None of these kids have been in trouble before". Smart kids get into plenty of trouble with the confidence that either they won't be suspected or caught, or they will be treated leniently if they are.

-I took the heat for a crime I didn't commit in high school because I was assumed to be a bad kid when in reality I really wasn't. The school became convinced I'd stolen this girl's Walkman, and I received spontaneous beatdowns from her Quarterback brother for the next year. Fark OWEN and his crappy sister ELIZABETH!

(20 year old news is old)

FTA: "They were very bright kids," Principal Nick Stephany said. "They were in AP and honors classes."

There might be a correlation with grade tampering and making honor roll.

Honestly, it depends entirely upon how saucy I'm feeling at any given moment...
