Actually, there's a significant body of research out there indicating that high heels may, in fact, be very good women. In essence, they provide constant stimulation to the calf muscles and constantly, with each step, build up those very enviable "fast twitch" muscles that provide high energy in short bursts. So, in a moment of distress, a woman can kick off her heels and sprint at a much higher rate of speed than she might normally be able to attain. It's an add-on to the original "fight or flight" mechanism, interestingly enough; high heels evolved as a fashion element because women as a gender were starting to realize that they were losing their defensive edge and needed a boost. Now, after several generations of high heel wearing, they're almost back to where they started. Biology is fascinating.

A model in chuck taylors is still a model, from 9 to a 9.01 tops, but a school marm who lets her hair down and dusts off the heels can make the jump from a 6 to a 7.

It's self-inflicted, they only have themselves to blame. I know plenty of women who don't wear high heels anymore (both of my sisters, for example).

/feel you're too short, baby? Instead of shelling out for 5 inch heels, try coming to grip with the fact you're 5'4". Saves money and ankles.

Yesterday I was waiting for the orthopedist to look at an X-ray and tell me if my toe was broken and struck up a conversation with a young woman who was wearing sky-high (like 5") platform stilettos. The kind that have a really thin, spiky heel, so in addition to warping the shape of your foot they also require a constant balancing act. She said she'd been in an accident and was having trouble with her back. It took all my willpower to point out that wearing shoes like that certainly wasn't doing her back any favors. I wonder if the doctor mentioned it.

I'm short, but as I don't want hobble around on crutches, I wear flats. They're comfortable. And I am much less likely to break my ankles while wearing them. Especially in the winter.

The ones that put somewhat of an effort into their appearance wear ballet flats. The rest wear Uggs, flip flops, tennis shoes, and occasionally Crocs.

The wife loves high heels but doesn't get to wear them often. 30 pairs sitting in the closet just waiting for their moment, and when it finally happens due lack of being comfortable halfway through the night the purse flats make their debut. She looks good wearing them but when it comes down to it, torturing yourself isn't worth it.

Women in their 50s and 60s are actually good at walking in high heels. Seeing some absolutely smoking 20-something get up an hobble or clomp clomp her way to the bathroom because she can't walk in heels? Big turnoff. Her mother failed her.

We are happy to wear ancient aromatastic sneakers that double as dog chew toys. If we have that little regard for our own feet, you can guess how little we care for other feet. We're only interested in the areas north of the ankle.

I should also point out that not all high heels are created equal. A lot of factors determine whether a heel will be comfortable or not - width, angle, and also the quality of the craftmanship in the shoe. A "high heel" doesn't necessarily refer to a 4" stiletto by Christian Loubotin, Jimmy Choo, or any of those other haters of women's feet whom I'd like to see wear their own footwear for even a single evening.

Women in their 50s and 60s are actually good at walking in high heels. Seeing some absolutely smoking 20-something get up an hobble or clomp clomp her way to the bathroom because she can't walk in heels? Big turnoff. Her mother failed her.

I can't wear ballet flats. My toes bunch up trying to get a grip, and my heels slide right out with every step. Give me a well-made heel any day. For chasing after the kids while still looking decent, nothing beats riding boots. Also, I can drive my manual car in them. Nobody can drive well in high heels or, god forbid, flip flops.

I do own a pair of 5-inch, no-platform ankle boots, but those really aren't meant for daily use.
