I'm really impressed by the amount of information in this article. I mean, if the people posting this were assholes or something, they might have put up some sort of headline promising one thing and then delivered a vague historical account of Alcatraz instead, the sort of thing you could write by paraphrasing Wikipedia. It's good to see that the Mail Online's daily reporters aren't ball sucking assholes.

Why in the name of Zeus's BUTTHOLE would you try to break IN to Alcatraz?! I only ask because in your current situation that might be valuable information....MAYBE!

Hostages being held by renegade Marines, duuuh.

They should really put a CGI 30 year old Sean Connery in the show. Or do something to make it interesting because now it's just that fat fark from Lost (how is he even alive?) and the uncool guy from Jurassic Park tracking down criminals. A marginally hot girl rounds out the cast. But put in a young Sean Connery who they have to find and kill because he knows too much, then you have a show.

Now this is something the other tour guides won't tell you. In this particular cell-block, Machine Gun Kelly had what we call in the prison system, a "biatch". And one night in a jealous rage Kelly took a make-shift knife or "shiv", and cut out the biatch's eyes. And as if this wasn't enough retribution for Kelly, the next day he and four other inmates took turns pissing into the biatch's ocular cavities. (short pause) This way to the cafeteria!

Dude, calm down. You know full well it's not a break in. It's an incursion underwater to re-take an impregnable fortress held by an elite team of US Marines in possession of 81 hostages and 15 guided rockets armed with VX poison gas.

In the early 60's? The government had much less oversight than they do now, it'd actually be pretty doable. Fake papers saying they were transferred to another prison, fake a disciplinary action to justify not getting visitors, wait a few months then claim they died of something infectious and you burned the body to prevent an outbreak. The only real implausibility is the number of people who'd have to be in on it for the coverup to work - I'd think several hundred at least.

I've no idea how they'd explain many of the prison staff going missing, though.

I was to lazy to change the channel last time it came on and I joined it in the middle but what the hell is the plot to that show? Is there some sort of time travel going on? Some sort of ability to change the past or something? I felt like an idiot because it didn't make much sense.

I heard there were lizard people who once took over the earth, and it was on TV too, so it must be true.

LOL - I grew up in San Antonio. Back in the 80s the city did a major revamp of downtown and embedded little round bronze medallions of the Alamo on every square of sidewalk. The joke among tourists was to stop, point at the little medallion and exclaim "I found the Alamo!"

The story about the battle fought there makes visitors expect something really big. It was just a little church in a remote outpost of a Spanish territory. Most of the story that we hear as "fact" is bullshiat.

2012-01-27 01:18:53 AM
I watched the pilot and was kinda liking it, in that "this is not gouging my eyes" sort of way, then I remembered it's a JJ Abrams production.
I'm not going to invest a couple of months or years only to be shived from the back with bullshiat like Lost.
Haven't looked back since.

Don't worry - the audience doesn't know what is happening yet, either. Could be time travel, or suspended animation, or cloning, or anything at this point.

I feel like the format for this show is more sustainable than the format for Lost. Both feature an overarching mystery. But there were episodes of Lost where the characters had nothing to do but hang out at camp, and the mystery was not advanced. In this show, if the writers don't feel like advancing the mystery, they can do a "catch the bad guy of the week" episode to keep the action going. They can mix up the formula by having civilians reappear (new civilians, anyway. There seem to be a couple of the old prison staff working with for the New Alcatraz warden). And, once the cop and Hurley figure out what's going on, instead of chasing criminals, they can chase Boss characters.

Well, they are the type that would want to visit San Francisco, so you can't expect a whole lot from them to begin with...

Hmmm...a show set on an island...created by JJ Abrahms...starring Hugo Reyes...and involving an over-arching mystery and (possibly) time travel?

Spoiler: Everyone's dead and in purgatory. There. I just saved you about 200 hours.

2012-01-27 01:43:33 AM
We all know when it's all said and done the last episode is going to explain everything happened inside one of JJAbrams wet dreams and we've just been staring at the inside of his creamed-in shorts the whole time.

Seriously though. Prisoners of alcatraz are coming back out of the blue, hitching rides on the tourist barge, and killing people in san francisco? How about you close alcatraz to tourists (for maintenance, or due to a non-specific terrorist threat or some such baloney) and stop running a convenient boat out there that allows people to mingle with 1960's serial killers?

I guess a bunch of 1960's inmates drowning in the san francisco bay or starving to death on the rock wouldn't make for good TV....

What really irks me about the show is that Sam Neil is absurdly incompetent at his job, and yet by episode's end he's the one talking down to Hugo about growing up.

/The show's alright, but it doesn't have that Bush-era paranoia that fueled the Lost writers and the imaginations of the audience.

Oh, and how do the inmates integrate themselves so well with being 50 years into the future in a city they probably didn't know that well in the first place? And are all of them going to be serial killers...because I have a feeling that you survey the prison population and it'll turn out that most of them have done boring crimes like armed robbery or 2nd degree murders.

I like this show.

After the plethora of "America's Best" contest to be a singer, dancer, pole-vaulter or whatever. Or, dear god, "Please watch me, I am an attention whore with a specific twist", I am ready for something that is at least trying to make me use my brain to figure out what is going on.

If people don't support this type of show, we are all doomed to an eternity of Whitney, Survivor, and Tyler Perry Stares At The Camera.

I don't think all of them are popping into existence on the island. The subject of the first episode did, but the sniper and the child killer from episodes 2 and 3 were apparently out and about in the world, as is the cop's grandfather, with no indication as to the location of their arrival in the present day. There will be some explanation, I am sure, as to why they all return in the SF Bay area, but knowing the show runners it might not be until the series finale.

Yeah, but then when he (a WW II vet) was in the first prison for the robbery, some guy tried to bone him in the showers and he killed the guy. That got him transferred to Alcatraz.. It was mentioned in passing in the episode and was easy to miss.
