Third (new window) scariest thing in the Antarctic.

The Bad Astronomer: Second scariest? O RLY?

That's freaking awesome.

The Kate Beckinsale shower scene is still the best thing about Antarctica, correct?

mitchcumstein1: The Kate Beckinsale shower scene is still the best thing about Antarctica, correct?

Better than the Kurt Russel/Wilford Brimley shower scene.

We should call Scott of The Antarctic, He's had to deal with much worse.

Some Antarctic stations started shipping out human faeces for incineration after gut bacteria were found nearby.

I think they ship them to Georgia.

For those who didn't RTFA: It's drug resistant bacteria from human poop.

In other words, it didn't come from Antarctica, we brought it there.

Now if it mutates into some kind of pandemic causing super bug down there, THEN we can talk about the death from Antarctica.

I believe the non-technical explanation is that the poop bacteria were changed by native Antarctician (Antarcticite?) bacteria INTO their resistant form through sharing DNA. Realistically, it's still true that all of you farkers who insist on giving your kids 2nd line antibiotics whenever they have an earache or a sniffle, and all of you meat ranchers who HAD to get a few more head of cattle crammed into a small feedlot, YOU're the ones causing antibiotic resistance.

Resistance is not immunity, and there are other, albeit less convenient and more expensive antibiotics, that can be used other than the penicillin derivatives.

Those aren't bacteria. They're baby shoggoths!

So how long till scientist weaponise it so they can answer the question of if ancient bacteria can be weaponized and released to return a modern civilization to the medical dark ages?

Why don't we just wait here for a little while... see what happens...

CygnusDarius: So the zombie virus is actually a bacteria.

Prehistoric bacteria, frozen in the ice. Nice little defense against global warming there, Gaia.
