Not exactly sure how an unmanned drone differs from a remote-controlled plane or helicopter, but they probably shouldn't be flying them around anywhere they feel like. You'd hate to see one of these things foul a real helicopter's blades or something. Admittedly, it'd probably cut down on helicopter traffic in LA, which would be frickin' great, but nobody should have to die for that to happen.

Nope. Bakersfield. You could also make a pretty strong case for Indio. Anyway, I wouldn't take advice about anything (except about finding some sort of dirt on your employer, and then blackmailing him into not firing you, no matter how incompetent you are) from someone named Norv Turner.

I think there would be a lot fewer helicopters flying around if it was known that people could shoot you down at will, so I'm thinking this sounds like an excellent idea.

But aren't police agencies nationwide trying to deploy these? It's magically safer in their hands?

Exactly how close are the LAPD helicopters flying to homes, that a small remote controlled object (probably can't go higher than 50 feet) is going to be an issue?
Also who wouldn't see our hear the helicopter coming and get the drone out of the way?
(in Canada we learn to yell "car"when playing road hockey, realtors can learn to yell "gyro")

2012-01-27 02:06:33 AM
TFA refers to "intense and growing debate about the safety of allowing drones to operate in airspace used by passenger aircraft," but no passenger aircraft I know shares the low-altitude drone airspace.

And fellas- if you're gonna talk trash, get it straight. LA is the asshole of California, Fresno/Bakersfield(/SF if you want to be provocative) is the armpit.

Osomatic: Not exactly sure how an unmanned drone differs from a remote-controlled plane or helicopter, but they probably shouldn't be flying them around anywhere they feel like. You'd hate to see one of these things foul a real helicopter's blades or something. Admittedly, it'd probably cut down on helicopter traffic in LA, which would be frickin' great, but nobody should have to die for that to happen.

No difference. FAA rules are, you can fly RCs and drones almost anywhere, with big howevers. One of which, which is new, when the FAA closes the airspace, cause of a POTUS visit etc, you are closed down too. There are additional restrictions based on the weight of the aircraft, and again if it is a jet, however, these are often ignored. "You want to weigh my RC officer?"

You also CANNOT get anywhere near a "real" aircraft, including helo's which are allowed much lower, usually 500 feet, and so can often be in "your" piece of air. Violate these rules and they not only pull you out of the air, and can seize your equipment, but they can fine you out the yahoo.

Additionally, according to the FAA, you CANNOT fly the drone out of sight of the pilot, even though the technology to fly by video down link exists, and is actually easier to fly with. Add to this flying by GPS waypoint, easiest yet, and you have a case of the technology being way head of the law. So, look for RC flying rules to change soon, probably allowing commercial drones to fly by video and GPS waypoint, but limiting, even further, hobby drones. The increased limits will be justified by 9/11 reasoning, even though, who needs to use an expensive drone with a very limited payload weight when you can just strap almost anything on a willing 12 year old...

Not that I've ever flown drones out of sight with GPS waypoints, not never. or used a willing 12 year old, for anything.

The Los Angeles Police Department is warning real estate agents not to use images of properties taken from unmanned aircraft, saying the flying drones pose a potential safety hazard and could violate federal aviation policy

Another example of NOT addressing the problem. How does any rule about NOT using the images taken from an umanned aircraft stop the actual flight of said aircraft? It doesn't.

In addition, that rule doesn't seem to address using "other images" that have been created using parts of images that have been taken by unmanned aircraft.

Nope, too small a payload.

I was waiting for smugglers to use trebuchet, since you can load them up with 50 lbs bags and hit the same spot every time, then found out they are. So now I've decided that they must already be using my next idea, so I won't bother repeating it, since I'll just look silly and/or tip off the man and/or piss off zeta. Government helo's, cops included, regularly spend there whole flight under 1k and over 500 feet, or less. Since at that height they don't have to worry about some idiot with a GA license.

The 1k limit is held about as often as cops drive the speed limit to the donut shop.

As for RC's if they are of any reasonable size, say a four feet or more in wing span, flying over 1,000 feet is easy and regularly done, just not recommended anywhere near a cop helo (having had a fellow pilot thrown in the back of a CHP car for buzzing a CHP chopper) (yes he was an idiot of the near terminal type)

True, but a trebuchet is more accurate, cheaper, and the "brains" part of it stays on the ground, so unless they catch you on the Mexican side, you can do it again tomorrow. However, if the payload is worth enough I'd be worth the bigger investment to make sure it went where you wanted it to, say a GPS guided rocket with a low altitude opening parachute. Too expensive for grass, but maybe for cocaine? I'm sure someone has a spreadsheet on this, how much a delivery method is worth versus how much it can carry versus odds of getting caught. After all, they seem happy to run GA aircraft over the boarder, drop the payload and if being followed by a black hawk bail out and try and get away that way. On the other side they are building semi-subs and fully functional subs, carrying TONS, and trying to sneak past the coasties. Which, of course, is why prohibition never works.

Ultralights, using cranes to lift drug-lade vehicles over the fence, ramp cars that allow other cars to drive over the fence, surgically implanted puppies.

I would think R/C aircraft would be useful in making many small trips. Heroin is expensive. A quick googling suggests $50-$90,000 per pound.

Happy Hours: Ultralights, using cranes to lift drug-lade vehicles over the fence, ramp cars that allow other cars to drive over the fence, surgically implanted puppies.

If they want to murder each other in the streets (and take a few ATF agents with them), I can deal with that. But you start cutting into puppies, you've crossed the line from villian to monster. What kind of sick bastard does that? There are plenty of people will to swallow your coke for minor cash. (Cool side note: Watched a special about a drug mule that had a long layover, had to shiat out the coke ballons, and then reswallow them. Twice.)

Why don't we just start going after the drug barons themselves instead of their peons. You got some guy who was either starving and just trying to feed his family or was even forced into it so his loved ones wouldn't be killed sitting in jail, while the Pablo Escobar types sit at some multimillion dollar villa living it up. We like bombing brown people. Hell, you could say we've raised it to an art form. Why not drop a couple of JDAMs on these assholes?
