zialu: Hai everybody!
So, it's been two weeks since I lost my sweet girl Avah, but she may have sent me a new buddy.

Four days ago, my friend found a wee, starving and scraggly little cow cat under his porch, so he thought of me.
He's kind of attached to her already, but he also has a sick dog and a shaker parrot and they're all crammed into his packed house. I offered to take her to his vet today to get scanned for a chip and make sure somebody isn't missing her.

I'm a bit worried. Avah had lymphoblastic leukemia, likely from undiagnosed FeLV. I've disinfected her litter box and carrier and cleaned the whole house, but I'm wondering if it's safe to bring in another cat? If no one claims new kitty (who I've temporarily named "Lucy"), I'll definitely get her checked out, make sure she's not FIV or FeLV positive or have any other nasties, and get her vaccinated. Plus, I'm still missing Avah terribly and sort of feel guilty. :(

Anyone have any insights?

Here's a pic of who's waiting for me at the bridge.

[farm6.staticflickr.com image 500x299]

I know the FeLvirus is a weak virus so as long as you used a good disinfectant, you should be ok. You'll also want to disinfect her bowls as well. Once you get kitty checked at the vet, he/she should be able to give you some pointers on how long you should keep cow kitty out of the areas Avah frequented most.

RevMark: I lost my Eatbugs last Tuesday. 16 years of friendship. He was with me through thick and thin. He was my Hobbes.

He was the smartest cat I've ever met. He "just knew" how things were. But he was such a sweet guy the thought of using his knowledge for evil would never have crossed his mind in a million years. All he ever wanted was some nipper, some of that crappy canned food (which he loved but I only gave to him on special occasions), some treats, and some quality time curled up with me. Just food in his bowl and some love. He was a simple guy.

Eatbugs used to sing at night sometimes. He'd walk through the house talking to himself. One night Wakko, our big bruiser ginger tomcat (RIP), had had enough of the singing... so he got down off the bed... went in to the room where Eatbugs was singing... there was a scuffle and hiss... then Wakko came back to bed and went to sleep. Funniest damn thing!

On Christmas night Eatbugs suffered a possible stroke. I freaked out when I saw him walking funny, like he couldn't control his back legs, and the look on his face was one of confusion and pain. I took him to the emergency clinic, but he was better by the time we got there. But he had declined rapidly since then.

On Monday I made the decision. I couldn't stand to see him suffer any more. He was just skin and bones, and unsteady on his feet. You could tell that he was just tired. I made an appointment with his vet for Tuesday morning.

I cried all Monday night. It was a decision I hated and the impending loss of my best friend was crushing my heart.

I found him Tuesday morning in the living room as I was about to collect him and go to the vet. I had heard the labored breathing from my bed room. He was already gone and I could see it in his eyes, but his body was still struggling to live. Ten minutes before he had been watching me get ready in the bathroom, meowing at me. Why didn't I go tom him then? He died on my lap in the car on the way to the vet. My hand on his should ...

I am so sorry for your loss. It is always SO hard to say goodbye.

These guys will be arriving at casa heathens tomorrow! Mikey (formerly known as Rocky) is 5 years old and 12 pounds, Murray (formerly known as Rosco) is under a year and weighs 7 pounds. They left their balls in South Carolina, really (great song title don't ya think?), have been vaccinated, chipped, nails trimmed, are heart worm negative. I asked the woman who rescued them how much she wanted...she laughed at me! and said 'I don't want anything, I know they are going to a good, safe home and that is what is important.' And there were many people who were trying to help these little guys who were roaming and wandering. She has let them all know that they are going to a good home.

Yeah, there is a reason for the names. Mikey (Michael) was my maternal grandfather's name and the middle name of one of my brothers. Murray, is named for my mom. nooooo, her name was not Murray but Mary just would not work for a boy dog. So there is a slight modification I name for dead family. Any more pets and I will have to go back another generation!

I'm almost all prepared for them. I have noms, bowls, little dog toys, treats......and lots of love ready for them.

I know they aren't cats.....but once they are here, in heathen house, there WILL be pictures of cats and dogs, living together!

Thank you, very much. :) I'm a very proud auntie.

I was testing out to see if I could figure out how to post a picture, because I wanted to introduce y'all to someone very special to me.

[i15.photobucket.com image 453x604]

That's my beautiful girl, Snowy. She was with me for 3 years, and was my biggest supporter, constant companion, best furry friend, and at my darkest moments my only reason for living. Last November she developed what I thought was an abscessed tooth, but was instead cancer in her jaw. I had to end her life on December 16th and it was by far the most difficult decision of my life.

I'm grateful to have a place to share her where I know people will respect and understand what it's like to lose someone so close. I think of her every day and hope with all my heart she knows I let her go only because I believed it was what was best for her.

Thank you.

I am so sorry for your loss! Snowy was so very beautiful and obviously very well loved. It is the hardest thing in the world to make the decision you had to make for her. You are the best parent she could possibly wish for.

This is Inky. My former mom-in-law, with whom I am still friendly, had to give Inky up when she went into a living situation that didn't allow for cats. As my ex and I got the cat for her, I couldn't imagine her living with someone else. She was extremely skittish at first (someone else in her previous home played too rough with her) and wouldn't get up on the couch or bed. She now snuggles with me on the couch and has revealed her true awesome nature.

Rocky could be my cat's long lost brother. Lady Macbeth was found in a drainage ditch at church, and now hides whenever she hears an outside door opening. She will sometimes wander up to the picture window, but only on sunny days. She is definitely over the whole 'great outdoors' thing.

So sorry for both of your losses. It does get better, and you came to the right place. Caturday is a wonderful place for healing and talking to people who have been there and understand your pain.

Someday, when the time is right another kitty will wander into your life. It won't replace what you have lost, but it will help to fill the hole left behind.

He's not a cat, but he plays one at home - Foz'scie loves his kitties and I've even caught him 'scratching' on the kitty tower!

We went to the pet store today and he got some new toys, and I had many people tell me they wanted to take him home!

i903.photobucket.com

Zara and Theo actually seem to love him! They let him chase them and then they chase him; they haven't used their claws (yet) and I've even seen Theo cuddled up with Fozzie for a nap!

I have yet to get pics of that cuteness, but here are the reigning cats who have allowed the dog to share their home:

So sorry for your loss, they looked like beautiful bebe's and are probably hangin with my Bart and Snaps at the bridge...

I suppose the great thing about Caturday (and all the goofy cat pics) is that it lightens up the sad.
Gives you something to smile about when it seems there's not a reason to... I believe we'll all see our bebe's again, and just like old freinds it'll feel like they never left...

Peace.
