Well, here's the thing: What do you make of changing the quote to, "What do you plan to do for blacks?"

"I dunno, I might go home and have some fried chicken."?

Everyone knows that fried chicken is verboten when talking about blacks. So how are tacos and latinos any different? Also, the comment definitely calls into question his decision-making skills. Anyone dumb enough to say that - even if he didn't intend it to be as idiotic as it sounds - probably makes any number of bad judgment calls during the course of a day.

I'll defend the guy, because I laughed at the quip and would probably do the same thing if I were a politician.

It seems evident that he was making an off-the-cuff remark, not a prepared statement that he truly believes all Latinos love tacos.

Also, how exactly is it the mayor's responsibility that the police screwed up? I sincerely doubt he put a policy into place to racially discriminate against Latinos...the police chief should be bearing the actual responsibility for this thing, instead of swarming on a guy that made a dumb joke.
