so subby realizes that 2/40.5 is a high per year salary than 5/100 right?

So, to gain 500K, he left $60 million guaranteed on the table. (He could blow out his shoulder in spring training and be forced to survive on a mere $40 million.)

He's gambling that he can get back to his Cy Young form and get a whole lot more in a couple of years. Big gamble though. He should have taken the $100M and been happy.

Apparently subby thinks that every rookie should just sign a 10 year, 4million contract. Cuz, hey, otherwise they're only gonna get paid 500K each of the next 3 years.

Yes, like every arb-eligible (and pre-arb) player. It's a risk, but if he DOESN'T suffer a huge injury, this will almost certainly result in him getting paid more.

If he doesn't blow out his arm/shoulder and is still breathing in January of 2014, he'll probably be able to sign a 5/6/7 year $125m+ contract.

My sentiments exactly... for some reason, most marijuana humor out there simply boils down to "HAR HAR I'M REFERENCING POT HAR HAR"
Cheech & Chong and Harold & Kumar taught us that marijuana-related humor can be actually, you know, funny.
Though, I've never smoked pot, so maybe I just don't understand.

Somebody pointed out that he's watched Barry Zito deal with the psychological baggage and high expectations of having a huge long-term deal ever since he signed with the Giants and figured it's not worth the drama.
I don't think he's really gambling with future earnings so much as keeping his options open while not having to change anything right now and still getting paid a large amount of guaranteed cash. I bet he's be pretty happy with this deal as it is.

he said something to this effect in an interview i saw in the chronicle last year. sort of saying that long term contracts actually put more pressure on you since if things start going bad but you're still makin the big bucks it just makes for bad vibes all around.

Maybe he wants the flexibility to leave San Francisco in two years if he isn't happy with the direction of the franchise at that point.

I did bring up some people that I feel actually manage to be funny regarding marijuana, but I honestly feel that someone is intrinsically creative or they aren't. A drug won't magically make someone creative out of the blue... some people believe that a drug brings out more of their natural creativity, and there's the possibility that that's true... or it could just be a placebo effect.

He signed the contract because he is locked into the giants for 2 more years, meaning they own him for 2 more years and he cant leave without a trade, and his complaints just go to arbitration instead of a contract.
Basically he got the most he could for two more years then at the end of those two years he will sign a $200 million/4 year deal, hes not a dumb pot head.

Actually, certain drugs will heighten creativity and imagination; no placebo effect, it has to do with chemicals and related brain activity. Of course, hypothermia and Alzheimer's heighten creativity, if you want to get technical...
GOOD creativity? That's always a judgment call.

I doubt he'd go to the Yankees, because I think he would rather not have such a spotlight. Who knows, though...
I'd just imagine him staying somewhere on the west coast, or close thereto.

Eh...the numbers don't really add up.
The highest paid starting pitchers are CC sabathia, Johan Santana, and Roy halladay...(getting $24 mil, $21 mil, and $20 mil)...
Lincecum is 27 years old (turning 28 in june)...so this contract takes him to 29 (turning 30 during the first year of his next contract).
Teams are not going to want to pay a 29/30 year old past 35...so he's only really looking at a 5-6 year contract (unless multiple teams get involved and decide to overspend in dollars and years..looking at you NY Yankees)...so realistically he's looking at about $24-$25 million over 5-6 years....or $120-$150 million.
Add on his current contract($40 mill)...he'll have earned $160-190 million by the time he turns 35/36...But this is assuming he doesn't get hurt and keeps pitching well for the next 2 years. (those are a couple of big "ifs")
Obviously I don't know what went on during negotiations...but suppose he said I want $21 million over 8 years plus incentives. This contract takes him to age 35/36 (same age as before) but he's now guaranteed himself around $170 million. Technically it's a little bit less that hsi theoretical total....but it's a sure thing right now. It's a done deal. He doesn't have to stay healthy and pitch well for 2 more years...he just needs to make it SF and stay healthy enough for the physical.
/that's my two cents
