That was an amazing catch. One of the highlights of my sports watching life.

Nice little diversion on our march to last place.

Franco went to the same high school as my mom and my uncle (and Sandy Koufax, and Fred Wilpon, and Larry King). According to my uncle, who was a couple of years behind him, there was some other guy who people thought was better but never made it big.

Oh man, you can't leave me hanging like that. Any other info on the guy? I love finding mystery players like that.

Whoever he was, he wasn't drafted out of high school. There were no picks from Lafayette HS between 1974 and 1983.

Actually, I guess it could be the '83 guy if I read your post wrong, though. If so: Luis Lopez. Made it into the bigs, but he was pretty terrible.

Addition by subtraction now that Beltran and Reyes are gone? If they shed enough overpaid losers they might stumble across some underpaid winners.

Sorry, I honestly couldn't give you any more detail than that. I'm not even sure if the guy was ever drafted. It's just something I remember either my uncle or my mom saying years ago. Lots of baseball players came from Lafayette though.

The school has since become shiatty and, IIRC, was split into several smaller schools.

Considering that the '83 guy was the last player drafted directly out of the school, that makes sense.

June 3rd? They must be getting better. Aren't the Mets were usually eliminated from the post season by Cinco de Mayo?

We were in our local bar the other night and an acquaintance had a buddy with him who said, "I think the mets will do pretty well this year" The whole bar got quiet and said "what is this a braves bar?"

A regular up there says to him "most of the time, but we really wanted to know what you were drinking to hallucinate"

Mets fan embarrassed, laughter was heard.

John Franco should be in the Hall of Fame.

He is third alltime in appearances and tied for 17th alltime in era+. If you pitch more than almost any other reliever and put up a fantastic era (2.89 in the 90s is fantastic) you get in.

Only knock on him is a high whip, but his slugging against is tiny. Nobody hit him hard.

And yet, the discussion won't be "should John Franco be in the HoF," but "how could anyone think he's a Hall of Famer?" All because he threw 92-94 and not 97.

I don't think Franco should be in the HOF. I don't have time to give a complete response why and I apologize for that (cop-out, I know). The standards for relievers are rightfully high given the low number of innings pitched in recent years, despite the high-leverage appearances. Most damning is how low his innings totals actually were by season. It's tough to get in the HOF when you're averaging around 50 or so IP for 15 years of your career.

I loved Johnny, though, after he got the save (the lead-up was often nerve-wracking, as I'm sure the rest of us Mets fans remember). I'll never forget that pitch he made to Bonds, one of my favorite sports moments.

The Mets were actually really fun to watch last year. Not good mind you, but fun. Their offense was pretty good, they gave a lot of PT to pre-peak players trying to win jobs, and were pretty likable in general. Looking forward to more of the same, even if fourth place would be considered a massive accomplishment.

If EVERYTHING goes right the mets could win 85-90 games.

There's a lot of question marks in that everything though. Johan needs to come back strong, Pelfrey needs a bounce back year, Bay needs to hit, Duda needs to hit, Ike needs to be healthy, etc.

Gary Carter is probably going to die before the season starts. Likely before pitchers and catchers report the way reports are sounding. That sucks for ALL baseball fans.

I've mentioned this before here I think, but the boyfriend is a Mets fan, while I'm a Yankees fan, and I can't help but give him some good-natured shiat during the season for how bad his team plays. He's happy about Franco, but upset about Carter. First Mets jersey he ever had was a Carter jersey.

shiat, they're going back to the '62 uniforms and ditching the black this season. I'm happy as all hell.

Classic pinstripes have always been the best uniform. Thankfully they're not trying to bring back the 80's uniform with that horrible orange and blue stripe down the side (I once owned one of those jerseys). I still prefer the all black caps though.

/happy for Franco

That reminds me, I have a ton cards I need to clean out of the basement, baseball and otherwise. I have 4 boxes of unopened Desert Storm cards, including 2 boxes of their Victory Series. Also have about 30 boxes of Topps, Upper Deck, Fleer, and Donruss circa 1990.

I wonder if they're worth anything......
