So this is like a missile shield, but less likely to antagonize pooty poot?

I'd be more disturbed if an asteroid happens to come too close to the moon!

To have any chance of interception, you have to have years advance notice, and this means better funding for detection and tracking, so we spot and confirm threats at a distance, where we have time to do something about them.

Next, you need autonomous interceptors already out in deep and medium orbits, waiting. If you count on launching from Earth, looping around some planet and then redezvousing with the asteroid while it is still far away, you're doomed. Far better to already have something int he neighborhood to match vectors with a head start, then you only need the smallest kick to render even thre biggest rock into a miss.

You know that sounds really expensive. I am sure there are better things that we could spend money on then preventing the extinction of the human species. It would probably not pay of in our lifetime anyway and you know what I feel lucky I like to gamble. I say lets ignore the problem for now and concentrate on something else.

Dude, we're still busy throwing sticks at each other and letting people live in the street. The chance that any of that shiat is happening has only grown less likely in your lifetime. I'd be surprised if Bridge Collapse doesn't become a weekly reality show.

Typical Loki, always trying to get mankind - and his brother Thor - to lower our guard... Now get out of here, you scamp!

The only way to make this practical is to launch/control/maintain a perimeter of sensing/diverting probes about 1/8th AU from earth within our system's orbital plane.

Any asteroid that's a threat to earth has far too much energy to just 'blow up' or 'push' by the time we observe it from earth. Observation and threat diversion needs to be expanded and ready well beyond Earth.

We're far too busy blowing up brown people and ignoring climate science to deal with global extinction.

At this point, I'm practically praying for extinction. We're just too f*cking stupid and self-centered to continue.

Look at it this way, if we really are an unsuccessful mutation nature will sort it out itself.

(ahem)

"You Space Nutters are so cute, with your plans to throw trillions of dollars into a void that's far too vast and hostile for the likes of puny humanity. We should be putting that money toward life extension research instead! After all, why should I care about all life on Earth being extinguished, if I'm going to die of old age before it happens?"
