Although I approve, I'm admitting:
It almost seems sad that they're quitting.
Since during a flight,
Some passengers might
Be short on TP after $#!+ting.

Food so bad that they required prayer cards? Impressive.

Have flown Alaska a few times to and from SEATAC. Nice airline - good service, and the in-flight food for purchase is some of the best I've seen on a domestic carrier.

It was a waste of time anyway. In the battle between deities and physics, physics always wins.

I may be stupid but I fly Alaska a couple of times a year and I've never seen a prayer card when I purchase one of their box o' snacks. What am I missing?

$6 for a bottle of mediocre white wine actually isn't half-bad, I must say.

I like Alaska Airlines. Not the worst airline out there, and the food is really quite good for an airline.

2012-01-26 12:50:29 PM
According to the airline, a marketing executive copied the prayer card idea from a rival airline in order to "differentiate" its service

yes, when i want to be different, i look to do what others are doing

Shills for the airline on Fark?

Yes, we should be glad we have to pay for a meal when we're shelling out hundreds of dollars for a flight.

The article says that the cards are served with meals, which the airline stopped serving to coach several years ago. So apparently, only first-class people are worthy of Jesus' love, or something.

Hundreds of dollars isn't a bad price when I can get to LA in 3 hours from Seattle. Try that driving, and you spend the as much or more on gas and hotels for the day and a half journey.

They're actually a good airline. Almost always on time, good prices for flights. If you live in Seattle and have to travel the west coast often, like I do for work, they are about your beat option. Virgin is a little better, but they don't go to all the places I need to be.

I'm dating an Alaska Airline flight attendant, so I'm definitely getting a kick out of these comments.

And this is why I check the comments before clicking a Consumerist link.

I fly with them the most, and I don't care either way.

/Flying first class on Alaska to Vegas later this year.
//Have to love those companion vouchers and splitting the cost with a friend.

IMHO, they've always been easy to overlook.

I've regularly flown Alaska Airlines and never received a prayer card with food.

Weird.

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the first class aisles and in the corners of the bulkheads, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward miles.

Nasty. We've talked about it but the fact is those bathrooms are absolutely revolting. Plus you would be surprised how many people get caught doing that...and face some serious penalties.

So how about the bathroom at the Alaska Airlines Board Room at Seatac?

I heard that place is heaven. I'm not allowed up there though...

I'm pretty staunchly agnostic, but when I get on a plane, I pray to any deity who will listen.

(Fly all the time. Got sick of it.)

Oh wait, I was thinking of something else. I probably could get in there, but we usually don't have much of a wait before our flights. She gets me through security without the line and we just walk up and board the plane.

My brother has the gold status for Delta (I think), and that club area is really nice. Free drinks/WIFI/food/expedited check-in. For people that fly regularly, it's definitely the way to go.

Working in the SF Bay area 12 years ago, I was going to visit family vacationing in Puerto Vallarta one weekend. Alaska Airlines had the only SFO-PVR route, but the fare was way too steep for a weekend. It turned out that the return flight I would've taken (AS 261) fell out of the sky and crashed into the Pacific near Catalina Island.

So I'm getting a kick out of these comments.

/Love telling that story to fearful fliers.

My boss at the time was supposed to be on that flight. Her husband got wasted the night before and they took a later flight. They didn't even know it had crashed until they got to the airport. The whole company was freaking out because no one could reach her.

/lost 3 friends on that flight

a marketing executive copied the prayer card idea from a rival airline in order to "differentiate" its service.

This may be the single most telling sentence I've read in a decade.

2012-01-26 03:32:21 PM
Well you certainly don't want to be handed a card with a quote from Revelation 8:7 -
("The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth.")

Heh, so if all the airlines copied each other, they would all have differentiators. Sounds like a rather naive marketing decision.

How about high quality service, including adequate seating, edible food and free wine? I would have thought that would have made them different from any other airline.
Since when did air flight become a commodity, sold on price alone, and appealing to non-traveling accountants? (Rhetorical question, I'm afraid).

Actually, now that I think of it, try taking Qantas coast to coast. I tried that a few years ago, and it wasn't at all bad. The return was on American. Nuff said - end of story.

The last thing I want to hear at 35,000 feet is someone reading a farkin' "prayer card". Do your real job, flight crew.

If you did get one then you wouldn't be flying "almost" religiously any longer.

Was wondering the same thing. Have flown Alaska several times, always on straight through flights that included meals or the ability to purchase them, and I've never once received a prayer card.

I've that idiot Palin women is going ape shait over this and is begging/demanding Alaska Airlines reinstate the practice. I wonder how long it will take until they give in to her demands?

penthesilea: Food so bad that they required prayer cards? Impressive.

Meh, not so much. I recall the food being fairly decent on Alaska. The prayer card is more of a quirk of the region, since it's a regional carrier (despite serving states that amount to ~60% of US territory) in a region that has religious extremes that make hardcore Southern Baptists wonder what the fark is wrong with the northwest...
