Based solely on his comments, sounds like the author is just assuming he's stopped completely. He simply said he was smoking way too much at the time, he didn't say he's completely stopped since.

And according to the long standing Hollywood Rumors, and some first hand testimony from the likes of Tarrantino and Bill Maher, he's far from completely stopped.

Granted, a multi camera shoot is going to get that same take from multiple angles. But you neglect to take into account the amount of takes total. Unless he's a Sinatra and he only does one take, that's still a lot of food. Continuity would demand that for editing purposes, he has to do the same thing in every take. So that hot dog he ate in the prison parking lot scene of Oceans 11? If they did 12 takes of that scene, then that's at least 6 hot dogs. Ice cream scenes would be more because of the heat from the lights. Multiple takes = multiple refills, regardless of the angles. It's also probably why he never finishes any of the food.

I'm not saying Pitt does this, but I was working on a job where the actress had to do multiple takes while eating a pretzel. Most of the pretzel, that didn't get swallowed (settle down!) while filming, got spit out. We had multiple pretzels so that she would have a whole one to start every time. Again, I'm not saying Pitt does this, because, at least from what I can recall of the Ocean's movies, he actually does swallow what he's eating, however I can certainly understand spitting out between takes. I like to eat and I couldn't eat half a pretzel, 12 or 15 times, without getting sick (or putting on a ton of weight).

iirc, there are a lot of mistakes in Ocean's 11 where his food changes from shot to shot. He probably just keeps working on it and they switch it up if he finishes, but he may not be eating as much as you think. There's a scene with disappearing shrimp that comes to mind.

Because of the heat from the lights -- and the length of time it often takes to shoot a scene -- mashed potatoes are often used to represent "ice cream" in many films. Think about that the next time you see "ice cream" being eaten in a film.

CSB: I was a stand-in on the film Adventureland. While waiting around between scenes I got to talking with one of the props people as she was mixing up some fake vomit for the character Frigo. The stuff looked nasty, as vomit should, but man, when you mix orange juice, mashed-up cheerios, maple syrup and a few other items together it smells like a good breakfast!
