If that was all they were paying I'm sure they would love it too!

Lets just pick a number and apply it to all Americans? Just one number for everyone! What a great and simple idea! I'm shocked no one else has thought of this!

I wonder what I should call it?????

Isn't the tax rate already in the mid-30s under the traditional definition of income according to the IRS? Doesn't Obama need to specifically target the capital gains tax? Or is he trying to change the definition of income to mean everything you make?

While they are not subject to the personal income tax, capital gains are undoubtedly income. That's not changing the definition, since 'income' is not defined as 'whatever is subject to the personal income tax'.

I think he's been saying something along the lines of "income from whatever source", intending to include both ordinary income and capital gains.

I keep on hearing that Capital Gains are taxed at a lower rate because that, "money is invested and stimulates the economy, creating jobs"...

Yet, I haven't heard anyone explain how that money stimulates the economy and creates jobs.

Can someone more knowledgeable on the subject enlighten me?

Back a few dozen years, when the actual manufacturing was still done in the US that money would be plowed back into the business, creating more jobs, both for the factory expansion, and the factory workers as well. more stuff got made, more stuff got bought, rinse and repeat.
Now it's mostly a fond memory.

Call it stupidity.

Progressive tax is about collecting the most money while inflicting the least burden on the society.

So, basically, these days, it's nothing more than a nice little perk of being wealthy and doesn't really stimulate anything except the bottom line of the wealthy?

that's just it - they WON'T be in that 1%. Or rather its extremely unlikely. class mobility in this country is largely downwards, not upwards.

Obama could tax 100% of the bajillionaire's money. It still wouldn't put a dent in the treasury as long as he has to borrow money to save it.

all this has become is class warfare at its best. Tax the rich (and you are rich if you have a job).

I just don't get it. if your guiding economic philosophy is 'f*ck you, I got mine' then you cannot vote Republican. the GOP already HAS theirs and has little or no interest in helping anyone else get ahead in life. the way the Republicans see it - this is a zero sum game. in order for one of the rank and file to become rich, one of the currently rich people has to give up some of their advantages...and they'll never do that because hey - f*ck you, they got theirs.

you don't know that! Those powerball numbers they've been playing for 13 years will come up someday!

Also, if they defend the rich, they psychically know and will send back good vibes to them, and reward them somehow. That's how it works.

If the comments to that article are any indication, it's because there's not enough spending cuts to go along with it. Conservatives love spending cuts. As long as they're not to the military. Or medicare. Or social security. Conservatives know that the budget problems would be solved if we could just cut all funding to PBS.

Horseshiat. So, do nothing to bring in actual money? That is the answer? Also, what does that even mean that you are rich if you have a job? Just because you have a job doesn't mean this tax increase will effect you.

This isn't class warfare this is looking for a solution to fix the problem we currently have. Will taxing the rich fix the debt? Hell no. Will it make a dent? Yes.

Class warfare is demonizing the poor in this country at every turn. Putting the tax burden on the 99% while fighting the good fight for the rich. That is class warfare.

Will this tax increase effect you at all? If so, how?

so in your book, 30% of a couple billion a year income (from corporations and the few 1% who make that much money) is exactly the same as taxing every 'rich person' at 100%?

um...you failed math, didn't you?

I just can't understand how that logic works. I suppose that's why so many of them are obese and suffer from low IQ's. I mean, cutting your calories won't make your drop 100 pounds in a week, why bother? Reading one book won't make you Carl Sagan, so why bother?

People who don't understand economics have pitched this. And people who do understand, like, you know, economists, have said it won't work.

I'd prefer a new bracket at $1,000,000 at 35% and 5,000,000 at 39%, but in reality, we need to increase cap gains tax a bit at that upper end as well

2012-01-26 01:28:36 PM
Ben Stein, the broken clock. He also repeated that worn out meme that about half of us don't even pay taxes, so that should be "fixed."

/If you earn income, everything above the standard deduction is taxable income

Guys, I agree with EnviroDude. Raising taxes on the rich will certainly help the situation but because it will not solve it in a single year, is not worth doing.

We need to find a solution that will pay off all $15 trillion dollars now, or we shouldn't do it.

EnviroDude: Tax the rich (and you are rich if you have a job).

Middle class and poor Republicans love to believe they are in the same boat as the guy making 100MM a year. That kind of detachment from reality is what we have to deal with when trying to debate them.

2012-01-26 01:35:08 PM
I have a better solution -- let's put a Republican back in the White House. Then deficits and unfunded wars and prescription handouts don't matter!

Weaver95: so in your book, 30% of a couple billion a year income (from corporations and the few 1% who make that much money) is exactly the same as taxing every 'rich person' at 100%?

By the same argument, we shouldn't make a single entitlement cut because cutting 100% of entitlements would not make a dent in the deficit (probably true for some definition of an "entitlement")

As long as you don't include capital gains this isn't much of an improvement.
