Based on my association with merchant mariners, he actually seems above average. It really isn't an industry that attracts the best and the brightest.

Well to submitter, it didn't actually sink. That was one thing he apparently did right (until we know otherwise), if a ship is taking water in, running it aground seems like the correct thing to do.

I guess if the vessel suddenly developed that tilt, one could fall overboard onto a lifevessel, if you were currently helping passengers into them. But that doesn't really explain why he refused to go back onto the ship. Had he done that I bet he would be portrayed completely differently.
