It's good of these noble reporters to bring this to the world's attention. Now the administration should issue a statement outlining all the details of how they plan to rescue him, and exactly when.

It's been 4 days, moron.

"If they try or there is an attack by any Western people," he said, " the second plan will be to move on board the MV Albedo," a hijacked ship being used to hold other foreign hostages.

In English, this means "We are farking idiots and will make ourselves easier targets."

2012-01-26 10:08:31 AM
Yeah, four days is not enough time to expect any sort of response from the US government. If he had been there for four months, you may have had an argument.

Subby and article author probably each had a date planned with the dude this weekend. And, they just bought a new outfit for the occasion!

I think the administration just did make a "statement" about how these things will be handled. "Some butts need rescuing, some need kicking, and all butts will have their needs met. Have a nice day!"

Expect this guy to get sprung once the "silent death by night" details sink in with those pirates. They don't want to die, they want money.

This guy knew the risks of traipsing around a place like that, especially traipsing around and poking his nose into piracy. If we can get him out with minimal risk to our troops then fine. I certainly don't wish him harm but it was his choice to play cowboy journalist and I don't see how his life is worth that of one or more of our SEALs.

The better talking point would be... There's an American on death sentence in Iran, why not rescue that dude.

Storming an Iranian prison would be quite different than raiding a house.

tfa, "was in Somalia to report about piracy, was kidnapped on Saturday."

where are people getting this iran shiat?

hes a man, men are expendable because men are not human beings in our culture. men are paychecks.

Bro just wanted to report on surfing and pirates.

He's a hunk and half, isn't he? Come on, Farkettes! Call your Congress thingies. This guy might be the next Whozit there ... Arthur Kent* aka the "Scud Stud" of the Second Iraq War (he's Canadian so maybe you won't have heard of him).

If this guy's friends can think of a sexy rhyme with "hostage" or "pirate" he's in like Flynn.

So, I guess since we can't really attack Obama for being weak on foreign defense anymore, we're shifting to attacking him for being too slow on foreign defense?

Guys, this would work much better if I found this stuff out through the normal secret-society channels, rather than through the news.

Read an article about the father of Jessica Buchanan being in DC for meetings when the president called him.

Looked up John Buchanan and hes a inaugural donor of Obamas($50k) and a lobbyist who worked for Podesta Mattoon.

If the two John Buchanans are the same person then I would say it would help this guy get rescued if his family were connected.

a girl i know got raped. she knew the risks of getting drunk and going to a party alone, in a slut outfit, with a bunch of strangers. her fault.

2012-01-26 10:33:40 AM
The clinker was that the rescue was ordered because there were "concerns about her health." What, being held hostage by machine-gun toting, medieval Somali thugs in squalid conditions is not a health concern? If you're fit when they rape, torture, and execute you, there's no health concern? Odd.

If you honestly think that this is an applicable analogy then I'm amazed you're capable of operating a fork and spoon. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're just trolling.

He'll be sitting in the heat of Somalia for a while.

Not like Navy SEALs are specially trained for naval warfare/boarding ships or the like, right?

CSB: Had SEAL Team 3 'attack' my ship as an OPFOR, up against our self defense force. (just regular sailors trained to use weapons/hard hand tactics, etc.)

They wiped out our security with paintball guns and 'captured' the ship in about 10 minutes, and we knew they were going to 'attack' that night so we had advance warning.

We don't bust on POTUS for being slow on 'foreign defense' (whatever that means). Heck, he sent 100 Army Combat troops into Central Africa recently to hunt down an African leader/warlord whom the UN has declared an unsavory character.

He is on the ball at posting our troops, quickly where needed .....

I got what you were saying as sarcasm; I should have just made my comment stand alone since I wasn't trying to refute your point. Telegraphing plans: bad. Making clear the price of piracy and kidnapping: good.

so you disagree that there is a double standard then? what exactly makes it a bad analogy? a man goes into a situation where he knows there are people that dont care about his well being. a woman goes into a situation where she knows there are people that dont care about her well being. educate me, i really do want to know the difference.

2012-01-26 11:06:28 AM
Another factor was that in the case of the two people rescued recently, there were reports that Danish man was in poor health and deteriorating rapidly. That certainly made that situation more urgent.

lazyguineapig33: educate me, i really do want to know the difference.

In our society, you have definite rights as well as a cultural awareness that women aren't supposed to be raped. A woman dressed like a ho may be looking for sex but she isn't looking for a violent criminal. Should that fall apart, her rights can be defended in court.

In Somalia, you're a foreigner looking to get close to criminals. You have basically no rights, little recourse and the fact remains that you were willfully seeking out violent criminals. If you get kidnapped while trying to get close to known kidnappers, for the purpose of reporting on their known kidnapping ways, it is not the same as a woman dressing sluttily and ending up raped because she started kissing the wrong guy.

However it is nice that the US is able to retrieve hostage citizens.

However the fact remains we are a sexist society that has much more empathy for female victims than male victims and you are missing the point.

Um, the better analogy would be if the girl went to the party with a "please rape me" shirt on and repeatedly asked guys to rape her. This guy didn't just take a regular risk, he did something that was essentially guaranteed to go badly. That's why we differentiate between accidents and negligence -- there's a point when you should expect something as being likely to happen.

And the other difference is how easy it is to help. If you could have stopped it safely then you should. If you would have to risk your life to do it then it becomes arguable although many would do it. If you have to risk several lives, spend a million dollars, and break international law to help her then probably not worth it.

Reading up on this guy... He writes books on surfing!

Methinks he was a bit out of his element...

"
Moore is the author of Sweetness And Blood, a book about how surfing spread from Hawaii to California, and Too Much of Nothing, about surfing sub-culture and two teen boys growing up in a city modeled on Los Angeles"
