If there is one lesson they want you to learn in school, it is to be a good obedient citizen, and do not question or disrespect authority.

While it makes sense to have policies prohibiting students from using cell phones while in class (as they are disruptive to learning,) this was a case where the student took a photo as evidence that their substitute teacher was not doing their job. Suspending the student is (rightly) seen as punishment for whistle blowing and potentially making the school district look bad.

The appropriate action to take would be a verbal or written reminder to the student of the cell phone policy, coupled with a statement on what action they would take with regards to the napping sub (this might be an isolated incident, but he at least needs to be talked to in order to get all the facts in their proper contexts and the sub needs to be warned about the ramifications of this and future actions.)

All for dumb shiat like what this kid did. Changing passwords on a computer and locking a hilarious picture to a desktop once I believe.

Not saying that the teacher shouldn't be let go as well. But a one or two day suspension of the kid wouldn't exactly outrage me.

Wonder what would have happened had the student taken the picture using a regular digital camera rather than a camera on his phone...

When I was in school if the sub was sleeping that was prime goofing off opportunity. If some punk.had ruined that good of a thing we would have jumped him.

I'll even go a step further and say anyone defending suspending the student is de facto trolling. While policies should be enforced, the reason behind them needs to be considered, and discretion applied to fit the circumstances. In this case, the use of the cell phone did not disrupt education, but was rather used to obtain evidence that the school district would presumably be interested in (since its job is to ensure adequate education for the students.) A warning to the student is much more reasonable here.

As for the sub - we do not know all the facts. Maybe he was supposed to proctor a quiz and dozed off for a minute. Probably not. At any rate, it would behoove the district to investigate the matter and take appropriate disciplinary action. Personally, I don't think he should be fired immediately for something like this, unless this behavior is repeated.

Right, calling 911 for a dying teacher is the same as snapping a candid photo of a sleeping teacher. And just like busting a sleeping teacher, there are multiple options available for calling 911 and no time constraints at all. This reply seems reasonable.

Back when I was in high school, each day of out-of-school suspension resulted in a 2% reduction in each of your classes. In-school suspension was a 1% reduction. Two days of suspension could mean nearly half a letter-grade reduction in all this student's semester grades for catching a teacher sleeping...crazy...

I don't think my argument is weak. I think the argument that the student should be suspended for this action is so incredibly weak and unreasonable that it is probable that those employing it are doing so for trolling purposes.

The school is suspending a kid for raising uncomfortable questions and for potentially making them look bad. The rule against the use of cell phones is not in place to protect napping substitute teachers, but to prevent disruptions in the learning process. If there was no learning taking place to begin with, a simple reminder of the policy would be warranted, not kicking a kid out of the classroom (and depriving that student from learning) for a day or two.

So the lesson here is that if you take a picture of a sleeping teacher with a regular camera, it's good. If you take a picture of a sleeping teacher with camera that also has phone capabilities, then it automatically invalidates any point you were trying to make and will result in massive punishment.

See, if the student had one of his buddies tea-bag the sub while taking the photo, then they could also level sexual assault/pedo charges on the guy. That would have distracted everyone from the illegal cell-phone use

Don't you think a teacher sleeping with students is bad enough? Not only that a student taking photos and vido of it is not only sick but creation and distribution of cp. Really, that student is lucky he only got a suspension. Then everyone present should be labled a sexual predator to protect people like me from being a victim of their deviancy. Fortunatly this didn't go on for as long as the Jerry Sandusky situation.

For people using the argument "what if a student called 9-1-1 on a cell phone to save someone's life!?" Aren't there usually land-line phones in public schools? Y'know, those big bulky things with keys like a cell phone but are usually wired to a desk or stuck to a wall?

As far as I know, land-line phones cut 9-1-1 response times by a matter of minutes because there is no delay in tracking the specific location of the call. So even if they had cell phones, the BETTER option would be to use a land-line. That is one of the reasons Sean Taylor died, lost too much blood waiting for responders because the call was placed from a cell phone.
