I'm a smoker. I smoke pretty regularly, and have been known to consume up to a pack in a day, though my average is probably less... half or 2/3. I've been smoking for nearly 15 years. I'm pretty much hopelessly addicted, and I recognize that, but I also enjoy it (which is probably the addiction talking).

That said, I will never understand these people who cannot go a few hours, much less a full day or two, without a cigarette. WTF? Seriously? How is it that you do not have the willpower and self-control to not have a cigarette for such a short time, especially when you know you'll get to have one soon enough? (granted, the flight was to California, which may have become a no-smoking zone for all I know)

True. I was the only one of my group of friends from college that smoked and everytime alcohol consumption was involved they all started bumming smokes from me.

Yeah, I've never understood that one. Why are you more inclined to smoke while drinking? You need the booze to make you stop caring about the lung damage?

This.

They'd be standing up at the bar next to a stewardess, in a haze of smoke, wondering why anyone would fight with a cute woman who does nothing but bring them drinks and cigs.

Back in the 70s, the "you are now free to move about the cabin" announcement was followed by the audible click of dozens of Zippo lighters opening up and lighting cigarettes. It was an oddly soothing sound to an 8 year old kid. The grownups all could smoke, so the tense part of the flight was over.

I hate to nit-pick, but I think you actually meant to say, "people who cannot go a full day without a cigarette, much less a few hours." The much less refers to you and your understanding, not their ability to go without a cigarette.

When I smoked I had to be sure I had enough for myself and them. After I quit they had to buy their own so they soon stopped as well although a few times early on I was encouraged, even nagged to smoke.

Haven't had a cigarette, dip, or cigar in over 11 years.

Or hell, a nicotine lozenge or something.

You can go without an honest to goodness cigarette for a while...

Why is it that some asshat lights a smoke and the entire flight has to be diverted? Unruly or not is it really a situation worthy of emergency landing? Unruly or not, just fly the plane and arrest him at the final destination. If he refuses to stop smoking.....umm...oh well...shiat happens, deal w it ladies.

It's because that first cigarette in a while makes you feel dizzy. Which goes along nicely with the alcohol buzz.

Either that or oral fixation.

they should make it legal for the rest of the passengers to give this idiot a beatdown

2012-01-26 12:11:38 PM
Gee, if only he'd have known that smoking wasn't allowed on a plane. Is this a new rule or something? It's not like the airlines advertise this or mention it in any way.

Rest of the passengers should have been allowed to pimp slap him, one at a time, for the rest of the flight. Extra slap for $5.

We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons, but that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part!

I've smoked probably 15 cigarettes in my life, all at bars or parties when I've been drinking. It just feels natural but I can't explain why.

Article doesn't say it, but it's only a 2 1/2 to 3 hour flight.

Sack up nancy! Was smoking 1/2 - 2/3 a pack a day and I did Newark to Shanghai without any butts! That's 16 hours if you if you include my connecting flight to NJ, boarding time, and customs in Shanghai before I could inhale the sweet sweet sector of the nicotine gods!

Why are these things still legal from a government that in all other words and actions wants us to believe they care about us so much? Money. Addictive and with no benefit and toxic as hell. I wish I had the money to troll the shiat out of Gov't all the way to the supreme court(if possible). I'd start my delicious Carmelized Asbestos Squares business. Then when I was shut down I'd sue all the way up riding on previous tobacco company studies and rulings that allowed other fatal, nonessential products be sold regardless of everyone knowing they are no better than eating asbestos.

I'm a smoker.

This guy is an asshat of the worst (best?) caliber. Hell, I'd have kicked him in the nuts.

As other smokers have said, (I'm about half a pack a day again, almost quit last year though. Almost.....) I do not understand smokers who can't go a few hours without a smoke. I work 9-10 hours days in a completely non smoking environment. I smoke one on the way to work, and leave them in the car. I don't crave them at work, I don't smoke at work, I don't even light one on the way home until I'm out of the parking lot because the whole campus is non smoking.

Farking farktard smokers giving the rest of us, who really just want to go home, have a cocktail and a smoke in our own homes, a really bad name.

Fark him. Fark him with a baseball bat wrapped in brillo wire.
