Because old people are attached to a world that no longer exists and can't be brought back?

Utterly irrelevant question from a puzzled Brit - I thought GOP stood for Grand Old Party. Is 'good' an alternate explanation, or is the Mail just being clueless as usual?

Clueless, unless there's something obscure I'm unaware of. Then I guess I'd be the clueless one.

"Ever wonder why your grandparents are such staunch Republicans?"

No. It's because they're flaming morons.

I think my paternal grandparents were Republicans because they were admirers of the Republican presidents from their youth, specifically, LIncoln.

Because they're dumb? No, really. On my father's side, both probably sit at just about average intelligence. Maybe less. Fox News was the only channel allowed to be watched in their home. Well, aside from whatever channel the Wrasslin' came on on Monday and Friday nights, of course.

Ok, well that's not completely fair, grandaddy did seem to have a lot on the ball, but he was so damned racist, religious, and persecuted, it was sometimes hard to tell the difference.

Uh, because these are people that fall for Nigerian email scams. They will believe the talking box says.

Also, they were too busy trying to get out of the great depression to develop critical thinking skills.

My grandfathers were Conservatives and my grandmothers were Liberals. Only single people elect politicians, that's why half the politicians are gay.

I always heard "grand old party" never heard of "good". I think this just more of the high quality reporting and fact checking that we've all come to expect from the Daily Mail.

Eisenhower is the most recent Republican I can actually respect. Bush I was tolerable in retrospect but did seem to lack in a certain something.

It's grand. I think they used good a word play due to the grand old party having a good old party.

For the past 2 or 3 decades it's actually stood for God's Official Party.

Until about Nixon-Carter period, the GOP used to be the better party. Then the Southern Democrats switched parties, and the GOP became the clusterf**k it is today.

And the Northern Democrats have no real identity, so our entire country has moved so far to the right that modern Democrats probably sits to the right of Eisenhower-era Republicans.

Love all the commenters in the TFA whose only takeaway was that people smoked more back then.

My Grandparents were Democrats to the End. One grandpa was a union Carpenter, the other the head of his local grange (farmers union). Both were Baptists. Both faught in WWII.

Neither smoked.

I blame Fox News and AM radio. It's not good for the political health of the nation to have propaganda fed to any portion of the population under the guise of news.

Connecticut Republicans are a different animal from Republicans at large. They tend to be more fun, and not a bunch of joyless religious nuts who shiat their pants in fear of social change.

And, of course, these pictures were from the 40s, back when the Republican Party was the pro-choice party and the Democratic Party was the party of the Klan.

Things have changed.

The only one whose political philosophy i would know was grandma. After she passed a decade or so ago, we found a stack of very well kept newspapers FDR's & JFK's passing & funerals...

she didn't smoke AFAIK, but she drank, bowled and played cards. Its not that she drank alot, its just that your grandparents drank little. So basically she was the cliche' south side of Milwaukee old polish woman.

IrateShadow: I blame Fox News and AM radio. It's not good for the political health of the nation to have propaganda fed to any portion of the population under the guise of news.

Indeed. I've always thought one of the biggest areas lacking in our public education system is the study of rhetoric and propaganda. We dance around it by reading things like Huck Finn but IMHO we need about a semester or two dedicated to it. The reason most propaganda is so successful is that we don't educate our citizens to recognize it. How many people even know terms like confirmation bias or can recognize an ad hominem when they hear one? Let's spend less time discussing Romeo and Juliet and dramatic irony and more time looking at ways news reporters, government officials and editorialists spin words to sway our opinions.
