I know some people can be cranky when they've been woken up, but taking a baseball bat to the person who woke them seems a little extreme

I have been diagnosed with violent parasomnic activity. People who had been around me long enough knew better than to try to wake me.

I've apparently told people off when they tried to wake me. I have no recollection of it. Only happened a couple of times a decade ago.

He must be unfamiliar with the infield fly rule. Common mistake.

It is common knowledge in my house that I cannot be held accountable for my actions for 30 seconds after being woken up. It has prevented a lot of petty arguments over me unknowingly muttering expletives at my poor wife, but it also means I have to keep all my firearms under lock and key in the basement.

So I guess the moral of the story is to not allow your nephew to move in with you if he's a dangerously unstable psychopath.

Depends on the night before, really.

The uncle suffered a fractured skill...
Yes, indeed. People skill.

completely depends. About 15 years ago I was working graveyard shifts at a hard disk manufacturing plant. We had 2 30ish year old maintenance guys who were both X marines. Well they had there little "maintenance" room where they would watch moving or sleep the shift away.
Anyway, what occurred is one of the guys decided it would be funny to T-bag the other guy then wake him up. The guy woke up, noticed the nads in his face, reached over and grabbed a pipe wrench and start hitting the other guys legs. Needless to say the guy had a limp (no pun intended) for a couple weeks but he damn well deserved it for waking the guy up :)

Watch movies... not moving. I should probably go to bed earlier.

I almost did this to my friend.
In my apartment at the time, the doorbell was a loud buzzer-type, and was inexplicably installed in the bedroom (instead of the living room). I was also living in an apartment building where one of the tenants sold pot out of his apartment. A few of his "friends" would ring my door by mistake, and I was quite frankly pissed at being woken up every night by people looking for him.
So, my friend rings my doorbell one night, around 4am, scaring the living shiat out of me. I jump up, grab my bat, and stomp out to my apartment door. With my eyes still screwed shut, totally pissed off, bat held up at the ready, I yank open the door and yell "WHAT!?", expecting it to be yet another pothead looking for the guy in the apartment directly below mine.
My friend turned 3 shades of white in that instant. If I hadn't recognized him right away, he would have had a hunk of metal permanently buried in his skull.

Startle reflex thankfully goes away as you age.

I admit, I've woken poorly, too. Sometimes, I wonder why I even sleep amongst an array of dangerous weapons - knives under the pillows, a handgun next to the dentures glass, open containers of caustic substances strewn about the room.
And I'm not even comfortable sleeping at all unless I'm clutching my nine-iron.
The easiest practical remedy is to keep a fair number of close, open graves ready to hide the bodies of more cable guys who think "sometime between 9 and 5" means 9.
