That was like a bad (cringe-worthy) Saturday Night Live skit.

I expect to see Kristen Wiig doing a bit on that within the next week or two.

I had a friend in grade school that would always attempt to do something on this order during the school's spelling bees. He wouldn't go so far as to pretend to completely misunderstand the word, but would, for every word he received, always ask the definition, usage in a sentence, part of speech, language or origin, etc. His reasoning was that it got us out of class longer, but he always struck me as the type who'd enjoy class, and other kids would wind up rolling their eyes at him as he progressed through the bee.

For that matter, I'm not sure "aptitude" was really the next word in the list.

That was great!

And he kept a straight face the whole time.

2012-01-26 06:05:13 PM
He couldn't hear her and he missed the definition the first time because he was nervous. Just because you are frustrated doesn't mean someone is trolling you.

Q: Could you use the word aptitude in a sentence.
A: The previous contestant had little or no aptitude for spelling.

I'm no expert, but I'd say these are native kids, American Indian or Inuit, but go ahead with your Asian slant.

Obviously, you do not understand reading.
1) he said himself he could not hear her because of the way the speakers are in the room. aka not trolling
2) she does not know how to pronounce heron and should not be hosting a spelling bee contest.

2012-01-26 07:41:06 PM
I would have just hit the buzzer and tossed the little wanker.

You know it's fake because the moderator was smiling, instead of walking up to the stage and b*tch slapping the kid into submission.

That's actually pretty common and lots of champion spellers do it on every word even if they know it cold.

zeet: 2) she does not know how to pronounce heron and should not be hosting a spelling bee contest.

Half the time she put the emphasis on the second syllable, giving it the spelling pronunciation instead of the correct pronunciation, similar to how some people pronounce Oregon by emphasizing the last syllable.
