Oh my goth, that headline is so awful (in a funny way). At least no one can use the "too soon" line here...

Too soon.

So much for the Happiest Place on Earth.

Guess I'll just go hang myself.

In isolation, I don't see anything wrong with selling the shirt, it's just shadow play in mickey's reflection. These days, kids don't recognize old album covers (they don't know albums at all, just novelty transmissions from iTunes and XM). The only mistake Disney made is that some people probably believe they're making a profit off of dead souls with this shirt. The atmosphere, all of this political correctness, will tear us apart if we're not careful. IMO the furor will passover and it'll be back on the market in twenty four hours.

Some people need to lighten up. Yes, I realize I am talking about fans of a band that hasn't done anything in 30 years because the lead singer committed suicide, but I've been a fan of Joy Division for decades and I didn't see a problem with it. A lot of us who grew up listening to Joy Division now have kids of our own and they are into Disney and we take them to Disney World.

Way to taunt crossover fans, Disney.

//steamboat love willie tear us apart

Meh. Joy Division mostly sucked.

The headline clicked for me just now. Kind of an unpleasant surprise.

I really don't see what the problem with this shirt was. People are just too damn sensitive.

2012-01-26 07:14:05 AM
Considering Joy Division copied it off a radio telescope signal they could hardly be upset if someone did something slightly similar, and that's the only thing you can say about this tshirt. The differences are more than the similarities. And there are hundreds of things that have been graphed that way.

Disney are evil for constantly extending the copyright on MM films etc but I don't think they have done anything wrong here.

i think it's mostly the irony of one of the most litigious and copyright-sensitive companies in the world appropriating someone else's intellectual property that has people in a tizzy.

I think it was more of a "someone in corporate found out the singer killed himself and/or who Joy Division actually were" issue than an issue of infringement. Disney lawyers would beat Joy Division lawyers every time.

2012-01-26 07:49:14 AM
Well, Walt was a well known Jew hater, and Joy Division was falsely accused of being a neo Nazi band by some members of the retarded UK music press.

The image that was used for the album cover was already in the public domain when Joy Division used it. Disney could appropriate it at will. As has been noted, I think it's probably more about someone at Disney doing a little homework and finding out about Ian Curtis's suicide that had them pull it. Disney's IP lawyers fear no mere mortals, but the company is obsessive about PR and its image.

I find listening to Joy Division to be cathartic. It can be relaxing and jarring at the same time.

No, they are not "emo", and referring to them as such will get you punched in the stomach.

I have always been aware of Joy Division, but I never really gave them any serious listening. Since seeing this story, I have been listening to them non-stop.

Thanks Disney!

(for introducing me to Joy Division, indirectly)

So the lead singer of Joy Division killed himself and this shirt pays homage to Joy Division what's the big deal.

Lots of bands have members kill themselves, Nirvana and Boston are two that come to mind real quick, and people pay homage to them all the time.

Thankfully they didn't release JD-inspired pants. There would be would a shiatstorm over the only size offered:

31L!!!

Who exactly is that shirt supposed to appeal to?

People who love irony, like the fact that Disney would model a t-shirt after a band that derived their name from the prostitution wing of a concentration camp, and whose singer hung himself.

Well a corporation taking pride in itself for their "family values" probably didn't want shirts paying homage to a band with a singer that killed himself that was also named for a group of Jewish women forced to work as sex slaves in Nazi concentration camps. I think someone in the graphics department had an awesome inside joke going and corporate found out about it and shiat themselves.

Being unclear on exatcly why this would warrant pulling the shirt, which I would have probably bought if I'd have seen it, I used teh googlez.

I still can't convince myself to buy an "Unknown Pleasures" t-shirt (see: initial post with that little girl wearing her dad's shirt), I still wouldn't have bought this.
