I pretty much trust my landlord at this point.

And there's no way a broken toilet here wouldn't be fixed the same day... this is one of the more tenant-friendly complexes I've lived in.

Plus, the eviction procedure, at the longest, requires 90 days (California, probably shorter in NM). I suspect that having the tenants declared legally dead in the absence of a body (on the assumption you get away with it) takes longer than 90 days, so all that extra time is additional lost revenue.

Just not very sound financial thinking there.

The IMF and the mafia get away with this kind of behavior when people don't pay they're perceived debts, so what's wrong with this?
Keep in mind, there are "libertarians" who say all taxes is theft but somehow thinks its okay if they just call it rent and give the landlord a private army instead of a public military.
Neither robbery is okay.

At first I was like "You must be fun at parties" but after thinking about it, I too would be pretty pissed if the guy sent his girlfriend to try and pay the rent.

As a landlord/former rent enforcement agent, it really isn't that difficult to get people out/off your property. Yeah, you might not get all your rent, you may have damages that are not covered by the deposit, whatever. Let. It. Go. Business =/= Personal.

Rent in BJ would be ok, I guess. But let's say your rent is $500. What's a BJ worth? Maybe $50 absolute maximum. That's 10 a month. Probably more like 25, depending on how you value it. So let's just call it once a day. That's a lot, even for BJ.

I'm guessing that in this case the deal was for one BJ for the month, though.

Noo no no. He went after the mom for the rent, and then the girl's boyfriend got in the way. He shot the mom for owing rent, and the boyfriend for trying to fight back. The girl didn't do anything so she wasn't shot.
