Why is it that the dentist uses super concentrated fluoride (which he insists that you don't dare swallow) for several minutes, but we think an ultra low concentration which is quickly swallowed is doing much good?

Seriously. And damn the FDA for having a "maximum safe level" of arsenic in apple juice.

Why don't you try swallowing a concentrated does of vitamin A sometime and let us know how that works out for you.

Master Shake: Well, I'm sorry, but if you can't learn that little lesson, then someone's gonna get their little mouth stabbed shut with skewers, and then we'll see how easily the axe slices through the meat! All right, okay. Maybe that was a little huge.

Stannous fluoride != sodium fluoride.

One tin-plates your teeth, the other fluoridates the calcides in enamel. But keep arguing from a position of ignorance, it shows off your good side.

seriously, though. WHY FLOURIDE? LSD would be much more cost effective. u could seriously put a 10 ng dose per ounce of water and get:

There's a maximum safe level for sodium chloride in your water, but no one freaks out about its safety in food prep.

I think you answered your own question.

The concentration that benefits teeth is present even in amounts that are safe to swallow.

Pinellas Park officials estimate it will cost the city about $1.40 per water customer per year, to pay for the manpower, fluoride and other costs.

Thus doubling the total dental care expenditures of all of Pinellas Park...

I believe that flouride is good for your teeth, in some forms/amounts. We even buy high-concentration flouride toothpaste, at dentist's suggestion, for Mr. PsiChi's teeth. No cavities for a long time, but dentist says it is a preventative measure. But I've heard that flouride in the water can pit teeth. Here's an example of what I've seen:

quantumsniper.files.wordpress.com

What's the difference? It must be that some people's teeth are just sensitive to that, or whole cities would have people with pitted teeth.

I'd rather not have strange substances in my water, thank you very much. The exception would be just enough chlorine to kill most bacteria on the way to the faucet, everything else I can take directly if I need it.

// Use a water filter, the water tastes WAY better and it isn't as harsh on my throat.

Dental fluorosis (new window)

Thanks for that. I'm going to post it here. Also, not going to let my kids drink brick tea any more!!

Teeth are generally composed of hydroxyapatite and carbonated hydroxyapatite; as the intake of fluoride increases, so does the teeth's composition of fluorapatite. Excessive fluoride can cause white spots and, in severe cases, brown stains, pitting, or mottling of the enamel. A tooth is no longer at risk of fluorosis after eruption into the oral cavity. At this point, fluorapatite is beneficial because it is more resistant to dissolution by acids (demineralization). Although fluorosis usually affects permanent teeth, occasionally the primary teeth may be involved.

[edit] Risks Factors for Dental FluorisisThe greatest concern in dental fluorosis is esthetic changes in the permanent dentition (the adult teeth). These changes are prone to occur in children who are excessively exposed to fluoride between 20 and 30 months of age. The critical period of exposure is between 1 and 4 years old, and the child is no longer at risk after 8 years of age. The severity of dental fluorosis depends on the amount of fluoride exposure, the age of the child, individual response, weight, degree of physical activity, nutrition, and bone growth.[2]

Many well-known sources of fluoride may contribute to overexposure including dentifrice/fluoridated mouthrinse (which young children may swallow), bottled waters which are not tested for their fluoride content, inappropriate use of fluoride supplements, ingestion of foods especially imported from other countries, and public water fluoridation. [3] The last of these sources is directly or indirectly responsible for 40% of all fluorosis, but the resulting effect due to water fluoridation is largely and typically aesthetic.[3][4] Severe cases can be caused by exposure to water that is naturally fluoridated to levels well above the recommended levels, or by exposure to other fluoride sources such as brick tea or pollution from high fluoride coal.[5]

I've had problems with dental fluorosis since early high school. My dentist linked it to fluoride tablets I was given as a child; the dosage was apparently way too high. My front teeth looked so bad that I ended up getting veneers. The remaining exposed teeth are very heavily splotched, and are prone to weakened areas that flake/chip easily.

It's worth noting that I grew up in a rural area, and that many people thought I was out of my mind to have my teeth fixed.
