The death of Captain Kirk truly sucked. Having a bridge dropped on him while fighting for the remote control? Sucks.

But, the good news about Kirk is that since the reboot changed history, that version of his death is going to never have ever not have ever had been having had will happeninged.

Baron Harkonnen: is going to never have ever not have ever had been having had will happeninged.

Okay, I'm going to need Dr. Dan Streetmentioner's Time Traveler's Handbook of 1001 Tense Formations and a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster.

At least Donald Gennaro died doing something he loved.

No Dark Star love?

I must be getting old.

I thought Kirk's death was ingenious irony. Kirk lectures Picard about staying on the bridge of his ship but in Soviet Veridian 3, bridge stays on you!

But seriously, terrible, terrible nonsensical movie.

Well at least we're not arguing about whether Boba Fett really died like they're doing in the comments section of the article so we have that going for us. Which is nice.

Well, there really ISN'T any debate. He lived, having been rescued by, uh...what's his name? The bandage wrapped bounty hunter. You know the one.

How did Professor X "get better"?

And I have to say Kirk and Hicks/Newt were just about the worst deaths possible.

I guess not. Now I have to go google this.

It happened.

With the reboot, nothing happened. No saving the Botany bay. No getting to kill Kahn in a sequel. No Spock getting all happy hippy hopped up on pollen. No "He's dead Jim." no crappy planets based on 1920s gangster movies. No submarine movies involving Sarek masquerading as a Romulan. No tribbles of Harry Mudd fer chrissakes!!!!

I'm assuming you mean "No tribbles OR Harry Mudd," because Harry Mudd never had the tribbles. Cyrano Jones did.

Yes, I meant or. Also, no Kirk v. Godzilla. It just never happened. And worse...Spock never gets horny, takes over the Enterprise, and kills Kirk on Vulcan just because some alien hussy wants to sleep with the hired help.

2012-01-25 09:55:49 AM
Mudd didn't sell the tribbles. That was Cyano Jones.

They are actually doing a comic series now that shows how those TOS stories play out in the alternate timeline, which is pretty fun actually. Also keep in mind that with the reboot, everything is happening in a parallel timeline Fringe style, so the original timeline the old Spock came from still exists.

Trinity. Worst scene in the history of movies.

You know what is missing from this list? Tasha Yar's death by Armus. She was a regular cast member who was killed off in the first half of the season just to prove a point about how evil some alien creature was.

I was thinking the same thing. I came to the conclusion that death was more pointless than undignified.

Except that death was awesome, despite the bad CGI and the only redeeming part of that movie.

Most of the deaths in Star Wars that weren't Obi Wan and Vader were goofy. Anakin's mom just plopping over comically when Anakin shows up and Yoda disappearing coincidentally just as Luke comes by were both like, "shiat, this asshole is at the door, I'd better die now".

Everyone had a dignified death on Blake's 7 except for Cally. She died off-screen, calling Blake by name, even though he hadn't been seen on the series for a whole year!

Let's also not forget Hoban Washburne and Shepherd Book of Serenity and Jadzia Dax of Deep Space 9.

Duke harkonan in the original movie with sting? I vaguely remember a plug being pulled out and black goo going everywhere while his hover chair spins in circles.

I think it was to prove the point that the actress, Bill Richards-Cosby, quit because she thought her character sucked so the writers must have said, "Fine, we'll kill you off in the stupidest way imaginable". Of course, all of the characters sucked in the first season and she came crawling back so they shoehorned her in some a few more episodes.

Yeah, I really hope Old Spock mentioned that. I'm going to be really pissed if Khan shows back up in the new universe.

Undignified because the actress who played her left DS9 for Becker.

TFA: "Actually, it could have been worse - in earlier script drafts, Hicks was randomly killed by a safety beam, and Newt was drowned in her cryo chamber."

Um, isn't that what the movie says happened?

General William Hague of Babylon 5. He lead the military insurrection against the tyrannical EarthGov President, but was later killed offscreen by JMS when the actor took a role on Deep Space 9.

How about Ilana from Lost? It's been clearly established just how unstable the dynamite from The Black Rock is, yet she's throwing water bottles into the dufflebag & then throws it to the ground? "I've been trained my whole life to protect you! (chucks bottles into bag) We need this dynamite to blow up the plane! (throws bag over shoulder, stomps across the beach) I know what I'm doing! (drops bag)" *BOOM*

Fox Mulder.

You know, there are worse ways to go, but I can't think of a more undignified way than autoerotic asphyxiation.

Oh, yeah, don't forget several of the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar in the first Matrix film. They got killed by a Joey Pants unplugging them from the outside.

IIRC, they got locked in a room w/a lethal virus. Off-screen death.

Most dignified death: Uncle Bob - Terminator 2

Baron Harkonnen: The death of Captain Kirk truly sucked. Having a bridge dropped on him while fighting for the remote control? Sucks.

It did suck, but I would point you to the few seconds before Kirk jumped onto the rickety bridge. Kirk sees how unstable the bridge is and pauses. What you see, in a rare example of subtle acting by Shatner, is the realization that he has to jump...but that he won't survive. This moment is Kirk's final Kobayashi Maru test, and one that he can't cheat his way through!

Lame death, lame movie, but I thought that bit made it somewhat interesting.

I don't think that counts since it serves the story. It established that wasn't Cypher just a selfish, disillusioned prick, he was a psychopath, to boot.

Wash was a shock but at least made sense in context. And Whedon's never been shy about killing off characters. Book's death served the story--it let Mal know that anyone they've ever associated with was being hunted as part of The Operative's scorched Earth policy.

Dax' death was dumb, no question.
