What is it with the Sun and kitchen appliances? They had a story last year about a woman and her refridgerator.

I have a toaster I got in 1980 that still works. Maybe I will see it make it to 59 years.

Take a piece of bread
Put it in the slot
Push down the lever, and the wires get hot
You got toast!

We had a West Bend toaster when I was growing up that was a wedding present to my Mom and Dad. Mom ended up with it after the folks split up back in '71. That toaster just quit working last year, after 48 years of near daily use. The one that replaced it doesn't toast bread worth a shiat. Turn the setting all the way up and it still needs 2 full cycles to turn the bread brown. They just don't make shiat like they used to.

I had this cool automatic toaster. You put the bread in and it trips a switch and automatically lowers the bread. It was an awesome device. The epitome of breakfast laziness.

It was made in 1955 and I bought it at a church yard sale. When I got married, the wife, jealous of the joy the toaster brought me, threw it out. I searched the dumpster but the garbage men had already hauled it off. She said "It was either you or that damn toaster."

Twenty two years later she says she should have kept the toaster and tossed me in the dumpster. "Well, it's never too late," she says. "There's always a dumpster and antifreeze around. Now drink your sweet tea."

Yep. I have a stand mixer that my MIL got in the 70's. I use it frequently. The newer models seem to be designed to break.

Btw, I enjoyed the story. It was cute.

From TFA: "A THRIFTY couple say their toaster is crust the job - "

Do they not have writers that stand up for themselves and say "No! NO! I'm not putting a shiatty pun as bad as that in my article. You can fark right off"?!

Toaster Central (new window)

I have a late 50's General Electric. I bought it for $5. It's perfect.

I fear for subsequent generations, second hand stuff ain't what it used to be.

Hardly a verifiable claim right there... this "journalist" sucks

A toaster is just a death ray with a smaller power supply! As soon as I figure out how to tap into the main reactors, I will burn the world!

That is because Taiwan and China make our toasters now, we can't expect too much from people that work 18 hours a day and make 4 dollars a week.

As long as an appliance works well, why replace it? My family's first microwave, a big ol' 600 watt Kenmore, lasted 25 years before it died

Probably not properly grounded by today's standards, I'd throw it out and get something safer.

My grandmother had one, and the relatives threw it out when they cleaned out the house. After so many years sometimes you had to lift and drop the bread a couple of times to get it to work. I'd love to find one somewhere, it fascinated me as a child.

I cannot find a suitable link to the actual story, but as soon as I read this headline I thought of the Piers Anthony short story "The Toaster". It is a personal fave of mine. I highly recommend it if you have not read it.

I have a toaster I bought from wallmart for $15 a month ago and it works fine. Turns bread brown on the middle settings, and can turn them black if you turn the setting all the way up. Maybe you just bought a bad toaster. Seriously, all a toaster does is get bread warm, its not rocket science. There's no secret formula for toasters that was mysteriously lost in the 80s.

I have one of these. They start to become a fire hazard after a while - the wrapping on the cables frays. You can get restored ones from toastercentral.com if you're willing to part with almost $300.

I hope this site allows hotlinking:

We had an ancient toaster at our cabin. It toasted the bread fine, but it wouldn't stay down. So we kids had to hold the lever down, watch the clock, release the lever, and we had toast. Neat looking chrome thing with a cotton-wrapped cord.

We eventually threw it out, but sometimes I wish I had the thing and fixed it up.

If you can find an old Sunbeam T20 toaster, BUY IT! Mine is 55 years old and still makes great toast daily, unlike many other toasters I've had over the years. They are smooth, quiet, and have no springs. I've bought them for all my family members.

A brand-new POS Chinese-made toaster costs $10. So it lasts 5 years; you buy a new one for 8 bucks, made in Bangladesh.

/English toaster was WAY over-engineered.

The Sharp microwave in my kitchen has been in my family since 1986! kind of worried it is leaking radiation, and its woodgrain sides and space to cook a turkey don't exactly fit in the kitchen decor', but I'm betting it will go another 40 years. (This thing gets used almost daily if not more often, and even the inside light bulb is original).
