This article is fictional fear based webhit mongering dribble... It would require a massive solar storm to knock out the internet. If there were a storm of that size then we would have other problems beyond having to "self-promote."

Well if the internet is used mostly for what they say it's used for, I predict:

1- a run on the Sears underwear catalog
2- a run on any National Geographic that feature a stories with topless "native" girls.
3- depending on the length of the disruption, maybe door-to-door encyclopedia sales will make a comeback.
4- almost no one will be asking "who?" whenever some internet video star is referenced as if everyone in the world scans youtube 24/7.
5- erasing or altering archived information will be hard as the information would revert back to it's printed, (unalterable) format.

Ground current in Quebec, ha.

A few months after we moved into this place, the weed eater kept catching the heavy gauge ground wire that descended from the junction box into the ground. I began poking around and discovered that the wire just went down into the ground a few inches and didn't connect to anything. There was no grounding rod. So the entire house was just sorta grounded, maybe. Rest assured that at daybreak the next morning there was a guy out there hammering in a new eight-foot copper grounding rod.

Living in an apartment with no grounding, I'm getting a kick...

/ I can't touch my coax half the time because a current is getting induced into it inside the wall. Disconnect from the pole outside, disconnect anything from the jack inside, touch the jack and still get zapped.

But if people need to talk to each other again where will we get our anonymous abuse from people telling a stranger they've never met what a dickwad they are based on the contents of one sentence they write?

If the solar storm is enough to i knock out the internet then it quite possibly would knock out the electrical distribution system also... we'd have about a week of no power before chaos would descend upon all metropolitan areas and it would be the end of civilization as we know it.

In other words, it would be a lot like SOPA passing?

Hmm, it's not very likely that the current is being induced into the coax (I've seen it happen when the cable line parallels the incoming power line for a few hundred feet though.
More likely there's a splitter somewhere that's connecting that line to other lines and one of them is hooked up to a tv with crappy isolation. I've seen some TVs that back-feed upwards of 80VAC onto the cable connection. I've also seen houses where the hot and neutral wires were reversed on the outlet and it caused 120VAC to be back-fed into the coax cable from the TV or cable modem.
It also sounds like the cable system in your place isn't grounded.

The moment the Internet goes down, I'm on vacation. I work from home for a company with the nearest office two time zones away.

Half the outlets in one of my old places were hot/neutral reversed. Took getting the snot knocked out of me a few times before I tested them all, pulled the master breaker, and fixed them all at once.

Current place has one backwards, but I haven't bothered trying to find the breaker for it yet. Probably should, though, it pisses my UPS off occasionally.
