Hey, it works across the river in Portland.

Academy Theatre (new window), next to Flying Pie Pizza (which is on the menu at the theater, just like various awesome beers).

Is that a ham and dog-turd pizza? I guess that would go well with most cinema fare.

Booze is sold in many UK cinemas - not sure what the problem is. One close to me has a full bar.

The theater at Disney Downtown has an entire menu like a nice restaurant and a full bar. They have waitresses serve you during the movie. I didn't go in so I have no idea how that's supposed to work logistically or what the prices are like. I'm guessing they're on the high side. Apparently people can't wait 2 hours to go to the Planet Hollywood across the courtyard after the movie.

Our theaters have alcohol and recently changed the rules to allow it inside the actual theater instead of just the lobby bar. The prices are actually the most reasonable things in there ($7.50 for a pitcher of Sam Adams during happy hour).

2012-01-25 09:18:45 AM
My local independent theater served beer, wine, and liquor. Pretty much the same prices as any of the bars in the area. Typically a good beer selection too (the wine, not so much).

I couldn't drink beer at a movie theater. Two beers and I have to piss like a race horse. That's why I always smuggle a pint of vodka.

I guess theaters have to do what they can to make money since the studios ass rape them in ticket money. Anyone have a theater with the D-Box motion seats? They jerk you around with the motion of the film and vibrate whenever there's an explosion. I took a girl to Mission Impossible 4 and she said she almost got off.

I have been doing that with rum for years. What do you mix the vodka with in a theatre though?

Never heard of Alamo Drafthouse, subby?

AFI Silver has decently priced beer. Difficulty: you can only watch good movies there like TTSS or The Artist.

Compared to the markup you see at a bar? Probably not that different.

The one in Orlando? The movie theater downtown is awesome. They sell wine and reasonably priced buckets. The food looks ok, but I never eat at theaters.

Not entirely sure if they still do this, but they used to show MNF games and Magic playoff games for free, too.

Funny enough, the Baywalk Muvico 20 sells a bottle of Sam Adams for less than a large soda.

Can't get an affordable beer, can't get affordable food, can't get a movie that doesn't insult you as a human being.

Boy, am I ever going to attend a movie, and return often.

We have one here in York, PA. It is a Frank Theater. Has a bar attached to one of the theaters. Have not tried it yet so I don't know the pricing. Just know you need to be 21 to be in that one and can access the bar through a rear door to it.

Oh how I miss Visions Cinema--especially their Saturday night Kick the Keg events ($10 for admission, including all the beer you could drink until the keg ran empty or you passed out).

2012-01-25 12:00:42 PM
My wife and I always smuggle in those little bottles of rum. Good times.

A theater with beer and food would be cool, but for the most part, we like to go out to eat first before we go to the movies.

Nothing, actually. I'm a bit of a drunk, I'm afraid. But I hear orange juice is popular with the normals. You'd mix it beforehand.

Theater that I worked at in my little home town got a full liquor license and cocktail bar back in 1998. It was great for us, because less people would come pre-loaded to the movies and be belligerent assholes. They'd wait to drink there, which could then be controlled via our arm band system, low level light cameras in the theaters to prevent adults giving to kids (not eliminate, but it intimidated enough people into not doing it) and allowed us to cut them off if we felt like they had too much.

Plus, we made a pretty penny off of it. People couldn't AFFORD to get drunk at the theater. People got just enough to enjoy their time and not be dicks to my staff. Worked for me.

/manager also ordered good German beer on occasion too

I currently live on Naval Station Rota, Spain, and we have a drive in here. Movies come a couple weeks late, but its great when everyone goes there early, lets the kids play on the playground and cooks out on the grills before the show in a big tailgating-like atmosphere. I usually bring a bottle of my standard drink of choice, a Cuban rum that they sell here as its a Spanish base we Americans just are privileged enough to live on. It is, quite frankly, the best stuff I've ever tasted and would be sacrilage to mix with anything.

Being able to bring your own spirits to the theater does lead to weirdness on occasion, of course. Like the guy that was walking up and down the rows of cars before the big show this summer with a bottle of Jim Beam yelling "Woooo! Harry Potter ROCKS!" But overall, its great that they don't care what we do so long as we aren't idiots about it.

2012-01-25 12:34:43 PM
This is a good idea, most people would have to be half in the bag to put up with the crap Hollywood has been putting out.

2012-01-25 12:38:14 PM
There's a theater where I live that serves beer and wine already. Not especially overpriced either.

2012-01-25 12:38:27 PM
Does this mean I can smuggle in a 40 oz in addition to my giant bag of "Nordish" Fish?

2012-01-25 12:51:26 PM
I go to the Artsquest theater in Bethlehem specifically because it has a full bar. That, and the live jazz acts playing in the main hall are pretty cool, too.

2012-01-25 12:53:22 PM
There was a theater in Savannah GA that was doing this when I lived there 12 years ago

2012-01-25 01:00:10 PM
I'm sure that's pretty cheap for a cubic meter of anything. I'd like to see someone eat a cubic meter of popcorn.

Orgasmatron138: My wife and I always smuggle in those little bottles of rum. Good times.

I finally convinced my girlfriend it's okay to sneak booze into the theater. She was so paranoid about it it was hilarious. I even taught her how to open her beer as someone is shooting a gun to cover the sound.

Well in my experience, that guy was going to be an asshole anyway. The booze just amplified it.

Every cinema that serves alcohol I've been in is a "second run" cinema that only charges a buck for the movie because they make their money off the food & drinks served. Hell, on even gave you back your dollar as soon as you got through the door.

2012-01-25 01:33:49 PM
The biggest problem will be OLCC regulations that prevent anyone under 21 from selling alcohol. Mind you, they can serve it, but they cannot ring up the sale.

Lexington has something similar, a Movie Tavern.

Prices are on par with about any restaurant. Ticket prices too. After 6 pm it's 21+.

We watched both Sherlock Holmes and and Muppets there. Was definitely cheaper than a movie and dinner separate and awesome. No kids. Big screen experience. Definitely the only theater I'd go to without second thought.

I don't think my band'll practice tonight since our drummer is sick, and I haven't been to a movie in a loooong time, so the drafthouse might just happen tonight. However, the weather is supposed to go back to shiat here at 6 so maybe not :/

There is a small chain in my town called Cinetopia. They serve wine and good food (these are full on restaurants) to go with your movie. The seats are large and comfortable too, plenty of room.

The Mill Plain one is nearest me. Click on the play button for some pics. (new window)

There is also another older theater in town working on getting a liquor license. If I go down to Portland, there are more beer serving theaters.

None of them are what I consider expensive aside from Cinetopia's menus. The lack of screaming kids the slightly higher ticket prices worth it.

2012-01-25 03:27:12 PM
Here in San Francisco, both the Sundance Kabuki and Roxie Theater serve booze. Prices are about what you'd pay in a bar.

2012-01-25 03:47:51 PM
The Closest theatre to me is a real one that shows normal movies.

The Beer prices are cheaper than the soda prices, it's kind of awesome.

2012-01-25 04:33:16 PM
I go to the Cedar Lee in Cleveland, Ohio and they have beer and wine. They even have happy hours. What makes them particularly awesome is that they sell bottled Great Lakes Brewing Co. beers. Their prices are close to what bars charge. Their markup on the Christmas Ale was pretty bad this past year.

2012-01-25 04:49:58 PM
Orlando has three theatres that I know of that sell beer and wine. I live downtown and can walk to one of them, it shows the newest movies and is very comfortable. Another one is a bit of a drive and is the local arty theatre with a beautiful outside bar and table service once you go inside to watch your movie.

Oh, and I just remembered the chain place just started selling booze too. There it is overpriced and small portions.

Point being, i drink too much beer and watch too many movies.

I love to eat dinner when I'm at a movie theater. After I meal I'll usually check my email, play some skee-ball, and do the Times crossword puzzle. It's a great night out.

2012-01-25 07:42:54 PM
My two favorite theaters in Missouri both have the same sort of set up - Comfy old couches instead of theater seats, nice end-tables to put your drinks on while you're watching the movie, and a full bar.

2012-01-25 08:00:58 PM
Why would they need "minor control plans"? obviously they cant sell to minors, are they saying you cant have beer being drunk in the theater if minors are in there too?

I love most things about Spain myself, but it isn't really like the rest of southern Europe. A lot cleaner, less crime, and REALLY laid back. Their beer sucks, but as I don't like beer much anyway and prefer to stick to liquor, I am not greatly bothered.
