Among the critic's archive is a piece on how "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," a.k.a. "Blatant 9/11-based Oscar Bait #43335," "handles 9/11 right." So, grain of salt and what have you...

I agree with this statement.

I'd rather watch ANY Tyler Perry movie than a Spike Lee movie.

IMDB has Spike listed as "Mookie" in this movie, so I'm assuming this is "Do the Right Thing 2: Electric Guidoloo."

Spike Lee movies suck.

Miracle at St. Anna and Summer of Sam were particularly nauseating.

Spike Lee = Not as smart as he thinks he is; hipster sort of suck
Tyler Perry = Lowest common denominator; Mantan Moreland coonfest sort of suck

Excluding a few instances. Spike Lee doesn't seem to be very good at what he does. Tyler Perry on the other hand is just unfiltered awful.

his trademark fourth-wall-defying techniques, as characters address the audience

That looking into the camera shiat was obnoxious in Do the Right Thing and I would venture a guess that it's obnoxious here.

Inside Man and Clockers were both very good. But both of those were based on other people's scripts.

Let me preface this by saying I have never seen any of Tyler Perry's work, but the commercials usually look like they have the formula of: "Look at this group of unreasonably attractive, young, wealthy professionals as they encounter conflicts that are very suburban and white; isn't this in stark contrast to the way African-Americans are usually portrayed in films?"

I feel like if I was a wealthy black guy, I would feel begrudgingly obligated to enjoy these movies.

CSB:

Years ago, a friend of mine was a student at Whittier College, and Spike Lee was invited to come onto campus as a guest speaker. During his speech, he went on and on about how there needed to be an annual movie award event for black actors, filmmakers, etc.

During the Q&A session, my friend asked him if he would be cool if there were film awards just for white people.

His response:

"They already do....it's called THE OSCARS."

/Bitter much?
//Eh Spike?

He lost in the American Black Film Festival, too.

Maybe they need to form the Spike Lee's Best Movie Awards. Maybe then he'd have a chance.

Spike has made around 4 worthwhile films in his career, which is better than most directors ever achieve, but when he's bad he's terrible.

His most recent one seems to have the theme of "domestic violence is hilarious".

Like Mel Gibson, his off the job antics distract from the fact that he's a really good film maker

Not really. As crazy as Mel is he never let the outside world seep into his movies. Spike, on the other hand, can't help himself. As others have pointed out in this thread, his best movies over the last decade have all been based on someone else work. He's an extremely talented director but he's at his best when working with independent material instead of something he came up with.

I guess Sidney Poitier, Denzel, Forest, Jamie Foxx, Halle Berry, Jennifer Hudson, etc, all need to return their White Oscars because there's been some kind of mixup.

Reminds me of Beyonce's father accused the Hollywood Foreign Press of racism when his daughter lost the Golden Globe. Even going to far as to say "thing have not changed for blacks". Never mind that at that very awards ceremony, the winners included Forrest Whitaker, Eddie Murphy, Jennifer Hudson and the movie Dreamgirls. Bonus: Beyonce lost to Prince, who last time I checked, wasn't white.

I've long gotten used to the cynical hatred for everything good on Fark, but this is a little ridiculous. Acknowledging that Spike is a preachy racist can be completely mutually exclusive that the guy is a pretty viscerally amazing filmmaker. He has a handful of outright horrible films, sure, as do all directors, but c'mon...............Do The Right Thing, Mo Better Blues, Malcolm X, Inside Man, Jungle Fever, Summer of Sam, 25th Hour, Clockers...........can anyone HONESTLY say that any one of those films is really "bad"? You might not agree with the particular social perspective of them, but they are far from bad. Even some of his truly bad (as in, poorly made) films, like Bamboozled or He Got Game, are still a million times more interesting to watch than 90% of the milquetoast fare put out by Hollywood every year.

The older I get, the less I relate to Spike's viewpoint of the world, but I would never discredit his talent as a filmmaker. And whatever racial pathologies he has, the level of knowledge and sheer joy he displays when discussing his favorite films and American film history in general can only be rivaled by that of Martin Scorcese. He definitely isn't a racist when it comes to his own taste in cinema. Whatever that's worth.

I would see it just to see Clarke Peters performance.

Spike Lee is a racist idiot who just loves getting attention, because he thinks it will translate into ticket sales. He's a dinosaur, and his shtick is old. He's a hack who only knows how to make one kind of movie, and that's why he's a terrible director. Oh and Red Tails? A movie about black people doing something great? It was made by George Lucas. fark Spike Lee.

How can it be terrible when it was nominated for academy awards and has a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes? Huh? HUH? NOTHING BAD HAS EVER BEEN PRAISED IN HISTORY. SO fark YOU.

Why yes, I realized halfway through the post that I sounded like a douchebag and therefore completely abandoned it.

I thought Do the Right Thing was fantastic. 25th Hour was great too. And Inside Man was pretty good.

I really didn't like Malcolm X though, for some reason.

And can you really blame him for being preachy when Driving Ms. Daisy, Crash, Blind Side and The Help get so much praise?

Do yourselves a favor, haters. Catch this one. It's definitely worth your time if, for no other reason, seeing John Turturro, Harvey Keitel, and Delroy Lindo in the same film. I think you'd be surprised. (Bonus: Scorsese was one of the producers.)

It was about 25-30 minutes too long. I still like it but I'd love to see a recut version.
