I wouldn't consider that the same. That's less of a, "OMG! RELIGIOUS PROMOTION" and more of, "Hey, the solider/marine/sailor/whoever that's buried here was a Christian." It isn't promotion as much as information.

Difference between a tombstone and a memorial. This is more directed toward having a cross with the names of soldiers who died during war inscribed on it.

It's usually an "a" symbol of some sort.

Here's one for American Atheists for example;

As you say, that is the symbol for a group called American Atheists. They do not represent all atheists ... only their own members.

Atheists as a whole are not a group, we do not have a symbol and, contrary to a lot of idiotic statements on fark, atheism is not a religion.

Agreed. But your name shouldn't have to be carved into a giant stone with a cross on it because someone else wanted to make a religious memorial.

There needs to be a Constitutional amendment that if you vote for a law that is unanimously overturned in the Supreme Court you get punched in the throat.

2012-01-25 08:56:01 AM
The American system: congress can make pretty much any unconstitutional law it wants and it will for the most part be in effect until some crotchety atheist/objector/rational person goes to a heck of a lot of trouble (time/cost/ridicule) to challenge it. And then, if you're like michael newdow, the supreme court goes to extraordinary lengths to avoid actually dealing with the issue at hand but rather to try to weasel out of it by dealing with sideshow issues (in his case, his marginal right to stand in court).

JUDICIAL REVIEW BEFORE PASSAGE OF LAW PLEASE.

"Our Constitution protects the freedom of religion, not freedom from it," Rep. Brian P. Bilbray (R-Carlsbad), a bill co-sponsor, told his colleagues.

If you don't have freedom from religion, you don't have freedom of religion. If you want to erect religious symbols on your own dime, go right ahead. Force me to pay taxes or face criminal prosecution to pay for it? That's another story.

I would agree with that. Pull the religion out all together and just put a small flag on it instead. Why do war memorials have to have a religious tone?

As a veteran, if I died overseas, I wouldn't want my name on some one's giant cross they built to lord their religion over other people.

Except judicial review often won't work - didn't one of the Supremes rule that the cross is not a specfically Christian symbol recently in a similar case? Which is as obviously boneheaded as throwing out the first half of the second amendment because you don't agree with it (remember, they're only activist judges if they're to the left). Yep, here it is - http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2010/04/28/supreme-court- rules-that-a-cross-is-not-a-symbol-of-christianity/

Simple solution: leave existing memorials as they are, and don't put religious imagery on future memorials. Done.

Religion is the cause of most wars.

Why shouldn't we acknowledge that fact on war memorials?

already done. It's number 17. The wiccan pentagram is number 37. I was stunned to see the number of religions with accepted logos for headstones.
