Unexpected laugh. Thanks, subby.

The video and this thread has been more entertaining than dubstep ever was.

2012-01-25 10:49:47 AM
it was funny enough, extra points for making it short and sweet.

I farking HATE that song/artist.

I have a dubstep station on Pandora that, among other Pandora quirks like sticking RHCP into every station imaginable, will not stop playing this damn song even though I thumbs down it every time it comes on. It's so damn annoying to driving along somewhat zoning out to the whomp whomp wop wop wop whoooooommmmmmmp and then IT'S LIKE OH MY GOD!

This should explain it very succinctly to you.

Man I never get tired of the dubstep.

Everything I wrote just now is true except for the part with words.

Ah. I understand now. It's a clear harbinger that I've just gotten old.

The fact that it aggravates the hell out of so many people makes it worth listening to.

/that video was not funny in the least, btw.

Agreed. Good concept, poor execution.

I really don't understand the phenomenon of dubstep memes.

Does it really bother people? I too have no real idea of what it is. Every time I hear a sample of it, it just sounds like electronica on the extreme side? Is that all there is to it?

If so, how is it:

A) Known enough to be hated. I'm pretty up on pop-culture, and I've never heard of it. Wouldn't it have to be known first, to have a million memes about how people hate it?
B) Hated? ...it sounds like Chemical Bros, etc just a little more intense. How does it differ from any other hardcore dance stuff?

Dubstep, it's just a fad/novelty, it will go away.

/just like disco

Meh. "Dubstep" has been around a long time with different names. In the years I've been chasing the sounds, it's been called: Electronica, House, Trip-Hop, Drum and Bass (DnB), Trip-House, etc.

The biggest problem I've seen with people's "WTF?" reaction to it is because most clips of it are short and only include the heaviest part of a song. It's like only knowing rock and roll by listening to 15 seconds of Eddie Van Halen play Eruption (remember Back to the Future?).

In any case, there was an intro on a BBC Essential Mix (featuring Noisia, a Dutch Drum and Bass trio) that had an intro with a man doing a superb job of describing what is so attractive about the music.

3:00 Sample of Noisia on BBC Essential Mix (6MB) MP3 (new window)

As you may note, this song builds to the BRAPPADAPPADAP, making it part of the overall rhythm *and* melody. This was only 3 minutes of a mix that goes on for almost two hours, evolving into their various songs and mixes.

With all genres, there are shiatty versions. A lot of the "Brostep" is hamfisted attempts at what the genre really is.

For some polished and impressive examples I would humbly suggest listening to some of the following:

Infected Mushroom (new window)

Spor (new window) [yes, MySpace]

Noisia (new window) [same guys as Spor, featured in the sample above]

Dubstep is what I imagine people who have pierced dicks listen to.

Oh, you mean techno. Why don't they just say so?

Are they not calling it techno this year?

Your examples of 'good dubstep' are a psy-trance group, and two groups that produce mainly dnb. That's rather damning praise of the genre. I think the reason you seem to like it is that you've found the modest few good dubstep songs and combined it with a lot of non-dubstep songs with similar bass techniques to invent your own super genre.

Awesome post. In my childhood, as I started discovering new genres of music, I enjoyed techno because of my exposure to the great 8bit soundtracks of the NES. I dreamed of all sounds being able to be meshed in harmony and rhythm, and in that regard, DubStep is the techno that I dreamed of as a child. Heck, my first purchase from job money in high school was a 1983 Moog Rogue on eBay, and I used to play around with fruity loops and other mixing software. My creative juices never congealed musically, but I still appreciate a good mix while I'm at work.

I'll just throw this into the mix, so to speak.

Knife Party - Fire Hive (new window)

Just came across the band randomly, but they had a free download of the EP on their website. I've been enjoyin' it.
