A coworker went to jail for a traffic accident. We wished he could have worked from jail. We would have hired him when he got out, but his position had been filled and he couldn't drive to work in the suburbs without a license.

The big issues are indefinite suspension and term suspensions.

Indefinite suspension: You can't drive again ever while you owe us money.

Term suspension: You're a bad driver so we'll let you back on the road.

The other tricky thing about Pennsylvania is the time of a term suspension starts counting when you respond to the suspension notice and turn in your license. I remember a woman whose records got mixed up with somebody else who committed hit-and-run. She was suspended until she turned in her license, and then a year after that. But turning in her license was considered an admission that she was the driver whose license was supposed to be suspended. (This was in the 1990s. The law may have changed, but why they would change it to be more favorable to drivers I can't imagine.)

So again, if you're not a bad driver (mistaken identity) you lose forever, but if you're a bad driver (traffic crime) you get your license back after the specified time.

MaudlinMutantMollusk: Well that was a disappointment

Yeah, that too. I was hoping for a good driving story rather than a Romero-like advice column warning you to follow instructions from the government.

I call shenanigans. Stoned people don't speed. They might well be naked though, because stoned sex is awesome.

I know somebody who was arrested for DUI (like, major over the limit DUI of nearly .30) and can't understand why he can't find a job. He keeps insisting he has all the qualifications, tons of experience, he's proven himself... and he's right, but I keep trying to explain to him that when it comes down to his qualifications and somebody else with equal or at least very close qualifications, they're gonna take the guy who DIDN'T spend three months in lockup for driving at three times the legal limit in an uninspected car with no license plate.... he really is an idiot.

If HE's REALLY AN IDIOT.. Wouldn't it make more sense to TELL HIM HES AN IDIOT. AS OPPOSED TO THIS DUI CRAP THAT DOESNT REALLY MATTER

Unless you are an executive, or related to someone who is politically connected or rich or a judge. Then the laws don't apply to you.

He won't need to drive when he's put on the trading desk in NYC.

Why else do you think they stay in NYC. Most of them can't drive anything except the economy into the ground.

I was in traffic school and there was a..uh...loser brain dead druggie dude (he was seriously burnt) in there that had been stopped for doing over 90 in a school zone (when the lights were flashing).

As duuuude told the story, he went to court to fight it because it was a $500 ticket. Judge said "son, you don't want to fight this ticket." Duuuuude said he did because he had a good reason. Judge again said "you don't want to fight this." Duuuude said "yes I do." Judge says "ok, i tried. Why do you think you shouldn't have received this ticket?"

Dude: "I was going to fast to be able to read the speed limit signs"

The entire class fell over laughing and duuuuude was offended that we didn't agree with him

I forgot to mention the judge immediately said "guilty. $900 fine"

It is true that bank jobs require a virtual colonoscopy. In my state, GA, you can lose your professional license for: reckless driving, DUI, suspended license, failure to pay student loans. But other than a credit check (freeze your credit to know which one they check) there is not as much examination as you might think and a "right to work fire" state is the one who will look deeper into your backside.

It's surprised me my few short years how varied those that hire treat people with criminal records. A great deal of HR personal consider their jobs to be gatekeepers as opposed to reference checkers, and treat most people who check the box as scumoftheearth without any thought to actual employment criteria. Having a spotless record is an admirable achievement, but experience has schooled me just how much intelligence and work ethic pull a person over their past. Honestly though, getting to work is pretty close to step 1.

Didn't he see the signs that say "Speed Limit 20 MPH while flashing"?
