Bosses said technicians spent a week resolving problems with the "winged" rollercoaster - which is designed to give riders the impression they are about crash into the surrounding landscape.

That's a hell of an impression..

Nah, you have to ramp the launch speed up to 60MPH and launch them. Then watch as your park rating plummets.

Wow...I'm surprised they didn't spell it "X-TREME!!!"

This seems vaguely...familiar.

One of the most horrifying dates I've ever been on involved walking a roller coaster at Cedar Point (he was an employee there). If you think riding those things is scary, imagine slowly walking the whole farking thing on the stairs that line the track with only a single handrail. They do that every morning.

bring to a festering boil: give riders the impression they are about crash into the surrounding landscape.

Given the photo, I think it is more than an impression.

Which one? Don't miss much about Ohio, but I do miss Cedar Point.

The Mean Streak was the one I got to walk. My legs were rubber by the time we were done.

ftfa: which is designed to give riders the impression they are about crash into the surrounding landscape.

Poorly worded.

"...designed to give riders an impression in the surrounding landscape"

Better

Of course, depending on where you get the dummies, this could be a feature, you know.

2012-01-25 10:06:44 AM
It's bad enough the dummies lost their limbs, but then they also got the dry runs? Man, that amusement park food is just awful!

2012-01-25 10:06:46 AM
And that's why they do dry runs with dummies.

With CAD how in the world does one design a rollercoaster where its not 100% obvious whether or not passenger arms/legs come too close to support structures and/or the terrain?

Nobody builds big expensive safety-critical stuff without modelling first, right?

2012-01-25 10:11:07 AM
And this is why we have regulations, people.

2012-01-25 10:11:54 AM
If only there were some way to model the roller coaster on the computer to aid in the design. I wonder what they would call that...

2012-01-25 10:12:54 AM
Solution: More durable dummies

My favorite was building the second hill too high so they would just roll back down and sit at the bottom until the next car came around.

Socialism.

\Let the market choose whether they want their limbs

Didn't they tell the dummies to keep their arms inside the ride at all times?

Just rename the park Action Park and open the ride up.

Yeah - to me, the fact that this problem can emerge at this stage in the proceedings is.............disturbing.

Perhaps they gave the landscape architectural builders a bit of freedom? Or a bigwig of the park saw the completed structure, thought it should be taller and asked them to make it taller in certain areas.

All a PR stunt from the park that announced efforts to "STAMP OUT STINKING STENCH FROM SCREAMS" and said "PARANORMAL ACTIVITY PROMPTS THORPE PARK MANAGEMENT TO CALL IN FORENSIC EXPERTS AT NEW RIDE STORM SURGE"

I've never seen test dummies with full limbs anyway.

Yeah, but with Space Mountain, the dummies only lost their HEADS in the first run.

The Mean Streak is the one that worries the most for losing hands. That wood looks way too close. Last time I rode a tall guy ahead of me had his hands up. My fear was seeing his hand come off and slapping me.

I've walked the track on the Beast and Twin Racer at Kings Island as an employee. Loved every second of it.

The Beast was built pre-cad pre modelling.

The design was changed dozens of times during the build to make it faster, longer... etc.

You can't build like that anymore, but The Beast is a great example of what happens when you give the designers a huge budget and let them do what they do best.

But we're too cheap to buy a tape measure....

Seriously, how hard is it to measure the distance between the track and the obstacles?

Meanwhile Son of Beast was a wretched and dangerous ride that was built using CAD.

Sometimes I think rule of thumb rollercoaster engineering was safer than modern CAD.

Yep.

Every new rider will turn to his seatmate and say, "this is the ride where the dummys lost their limbs. Hope that doesnt happen to us... hahahahah OMG!".
