As an admin you can probably search for how many posts I've used those in since taking the pics in 2006.

I'm surprised more people don't complain about seeing them over and over and over and over and over and over and....

I could, if I was so inclined, but somethings are worth seeing again.

Wow, I never knew you were a Modmin.Good on you.
Then again, I am lazy with clicking profiles a lot of the time.
I do agree though- folks should post aurora pics- both borealis and australias. Even if they have been posted before.

FTA: The radiation - in the form of protons - came flying out of the sun at 93 million miles per hour.

FTA (Little orange box): These particles stream away from the sun at speeds of about 1 million mph ...

That's one hell of a speed difference, did something brake?

One of these years I need to go way up north to see the northern lights for myself.

Me too. When I lived in Seattle, I'd always hoped that I could see them from somewhere nearby. But I never got the chance.

Now in Tokyo, I'm lucky if I can see the stars at all.

I saw them once in New Hampshire about 30 years ago, guess we really aren't north enough though. Clouds probably don't help either.

2012-01-25 03:20:05 AM
I remember seeing the auroras when I was a kid.

If only I farking knew how significant those northern lights were.

Be on the look-out for a well-dressed gentleman and his snow lynx companion trying to harbour the energy of said lights to blast open a rift between worlds.

my cunning plan backfired.
If I had told you folks to post aurora snow pics you would have been getting ban hammered
all night in your zeal to post pics and forget to label them NSFW.
But no other aurora pics. im am dissapointed . you all have mobile phones or cameras
and this is happening right now and nobody wants to share a pic or 2 of the lights ?

Heh! I didn't even know who she was until you mention NSFW and I googled her.

Too far south here.

Quick question:

Just how bad does the solar storms have to be to make auroras all the way down to the equators? Would it have an extremely detrimental effect?

The Carrington Super Flare of 1859 produced Auroras as far south as the Caribbean, but that's a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing.

So yeah, not often, but it's not impossible. As far as I know, intense magnetic storms don't cause any permanent damage to Earth or it's magnetosphere, but they do disrupt electronics.

Are there any studies about how these solar storms affect animals, because my dog was acting batshiat crazy last night, and a little less so tonight. Running around the house, jumping on beds acting like she wants to go outside and play....at 3am last night...12am tonight. She's never done that before.

I don't know about dogs, but I do know that these storms can affect migratory animals, causing them to become confused and lose their sense of direction.

I'm going to Reykjavík next week and i there anything I should see in particular? Some people have told me to get out and experience the countryside, I plan to hike a glacier and try to see the lights.

I was hoping they might get as far south as PDX, but it's completely overcast with a bunch of light pollution around here, so I guess it doesn't matter. I wouldn't mind being on Mt. Hood right about now.
