I knew we wouldn't be able to keep him, but this still hurts. I just have to hope Ryan Braun's appeal is successful.

2012-01-24 08:42:57 PM
I love all the retro clips MLB is posting about him as a kid. Like the one where he's wearing Cubs parachute pants and a similar NY Football Giants tee, with a Tigers hat playing catch with Cecil. Or him taking batting practice from Francona in 1996....

2012-01-24 08:43:46 PM
Damn. I wanted him to stay in Milwaukee forever. I don't blame him for leaving, but jeeze. It sucks to imagine him not on the team next year.

I'm a Tigers fan, and this contract saddens me deeply. He's going to need to run the bases with a walker in a couple years.

2012-01-24 08:50:31 PM
Cabrera told a Spanish newspaper he's going to 3rd base. That lineup is gonna be scary, and the Tigers have already proved they can win with shiat defense at third.

Right, but is Cabrera going to like being a 3B again?

/I can't stand most sports blogs, so I am thrilled to be able to discuss this with my Fark peeps.

It was all a matter of time. That said, I give credit to management for going for it this past season and keeping him around. They knew full well that they could get a fair amount in a trade in 2010, but decided to let it ride. Oh well.

Anyway, thanks for the memories, Prince, and good luck in Detroit!

It was only a short blurb on the Free Press site, but it sounded like he was happy about it. He called it his natural position. Other articles say he's been losing weight all winter, so it looks hopeful. Hopefully they can get someone cheap to hit leadoff and play left and make Young the DH.

The idea of a lineup with Cabrera and Fielder as 3 and 4 is terrifying. I think that's worth the money even considering the defensive/baserunning issues. The end of Prince's contract might suck though.

I was on a call at work when one of the guys on my team told me about it. I was giddy like a schoolgirl the rest of the day. I'm so glad I bought my season tickets last year and renewed them again this year. Opening day is going to be nuts.

ArkAngel: I knew we wouldn't be able to keep him, but this still hurts. I just have to hope Ryan Braun's appeal is successful.

I think we'll be fine whether or not Braun's appeal succeeds or not. If Hart, Weeks, Greinke, Gallardo, etc. and company can be over .500 over the first 50 games (if Braun is suspended), We'll be alright

Chemistry, management and being hot in October wins championships, not a stacked line up.

Well, this deal is really going to hurt down the line, so it's a Tigers commitment to win now. Can't say it's a bad idea, with Cabrera and Verlander it's time to strike. My question is since Martinez was DHing, why don't Cabrera/Fielder share DH duties(Based on tiredness etc) and they just put someone else at 3rd?

2012-01-25 12:29:39 AM
I'm glad the nats didn't overbid. They can't afford that, and it's not like they needed a first baseman.

this team is built to compete until 2014, after that they'll deal everyone to the Yankees and start rebuilding. Between Verlander, Cabrera, Fielder, and a resigned Young, at least one of them will still be good enough to warrant packaging someone's bad contract. If Verlander still has the stuff, the Yankees will trade for him and eat a drunken 350lb Cabrera contract too.

Is Fielder or Cabrera too slow to play right? Are they any slower than Ordonez has been the last few years?

That might be what ends up happening if Cabrera can't hold his own at 3rd, but why not try him there first? They can't afford anyone good to play 3rd now, so it's basically a choice between Inge and Cabrera. Don Kelly is still there for a late inning sub (and Cabby would switch to DH for his last at bat). A fat Cabrera hitting .340 is an upgrade over Inge's range and .180.

Mike Ilitch is the best owner and friend to a city you could ever ask for. Exciting time to be a Tigers fan, I know it has to suck right now as a Brewers fan so I am not going to go overboard.

I still have them finishing second in the (very weak) NL Central (my prediction is assuming Braun plays though, which I think he will)

I worshipped Cecil Fielder growing up as a little kid in the D...

Picking up Big Daddy's son is a dream come true...

2012-01-25 02:51:27 AM
I posted this earlier before the Fielder thread showed up:

Step 1: Sell Little Caesar's pizza to pay for sports empire
Step 2: Hire obese player to one of those sports teams, pay him a boatload
Step 3: Profit as obese player eats all your pizza

Mike Illitch is a genius - he figured out Step 2

CSB - Cecil used to live on Kenwood in GPF a few blocks from my parents and I went to the same schools as Prince albeit a few years before him.

2012-01-25 02:53:23 AM
I heard today that Cecil stole a total of 2 bases his entire career - it's like Michigan is trying to steal the crown of "Most Obese State" from Mississippi.

2012-01-25 03:13:28 AM
I wish i could link to the thread last year when all the Red Sox fans were talking about "World Series, book it, done" when Crawford was signed. It is baseball. The team that wins it all is the hottest, healthiest and most well managed at the end of the season. You got a fight with the Angels and the White Sox's, not to mention the Red Sox and and Yankees. Gonna be horrid on defense but if jhonny peralta can maintain what he did last year we may be looking at one of the better offensive infields of recent memory.

/outsider prospective
//forever alone as a Braves fan

I'm not terribly concerned about it. I think the NL Central is going to be a pretty weak division this year. Cardinals have lost Pujols, and I expect Berkman will not repeat last year's performance so there goes a lot of offensive power. Brewers lost Fielder Cubs/Pirates/Astros/Reds haven't made enough moves to convince me that they'll be radically different teams than last year.

The Astros moved to the AL. That's about the only difference they'll have.

I'm excited to see Prince back in the D, but only time will tell how well this move works.

But seriously. It's a long season and you just gotta trust it. Injuries, breakout stars, so much can happen over the course of 162. Should be fun to watch.

I can't believe they're stupid enough to play him at 3rd. Why would they...do get Ryan Raburn's bat in the lineup? He was a horrible 3rd baseman 4 years and 50 pounds ago. Just play him at 1st/DH where he belongs.

Detroit is going to be an interesting team this year. Verlander, Fister, Scherzer, Porcello is a good starting 4. Not sure who the #5 starter will be, but at least it's not going to be Brad Penny. It's all about staying healthy at this point.
