Haha, that made my local news -- heard it when I was driving home. Spend $211 to make about$10. I have a pretty good idea why she's broke. That, and the probable meth addiction.

Stolen benefits card. It was the only way her tiny little brain could make cash out of the deal. I am reminded when Homer Simpson found the penut under his couch next to a $20 bill.

I was thinking more:
"Okay, boy. This is where all the hard work, sacrifice, and painful scaldings pay off."
"Four pounds of grease ... that comes to ... sixty-three cents."
"Woo-hoo!"
"Dad, all that bacon cost twenty-seven dollars."
"Yeah, but your mom paid for that!"
"But doesn't she get her money from you?"
"And I get my money from grease! What's the problem?"

Christ, her brain must be the size of a peanut....you'd think that she would at least try bartering the twelve packs. Crack dealers get thirsty, too. Or maybe she thought that the full pop (yes, I said POP) cans would trick the can return machine into giving her more money.

Clearly, the solution is to throw the baby out with the bathwater and starve innocent families. I know this because cherry-picking some examples of fraud is what Hannity told me about social justice.
Look it up, fools. You're being robbed of YOUR tax dollars! Wake up!

I can't even begin to imagine how much damage this shiat-for-brains did to the can redemption machine. I know the article says the damage is over $250, but most models crush each can, so you'd have soda spraying all over the interior of the machine. It might even be cheaper just to replace the machine.

I'd think the problem would be that the machine wouldn't be able to crush a full can, and probably broke some moving pieces by doing that.
I'm kind of tempted to go to Winco and see what happens.

The sad part is this happens all the time in Detroit and Flint. What got her busted was stealing the EBT. People here buy the biggest cases of generic pop, dump it out in the parking lot then go inside for that 10 cent deposit/can. I heard one lady wanted the deposit back before she was done with the transaction.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that her ultimate goal wasn't to obtain food. Since the grocery store doesn't sell Meth and, even they did, you probably couldn't use your EBT card to buy it, she needed cash. A better plan would be to buy decent groceries and then sell them for half price in the parking lot. You still come out roughly $100 ahead (instead of $10). I guess there's a reason she's breaking recycling machines instead of pulling off Swordfish style heists to get her cash.

"Cafarelli immediately took the cans to the store's digital can return machine and attempted to deposit them without emptying them."
I used to be a bottle return biatch, so I really want to get a kick out of this persons FACE. Though, its not as bad as the hobos who "refill" the containers before returning them. After one piss-bomb too many, I ran as far away from that job as I could, only to end up now working as a nurse, where I am once again occasionally dealing with containers full of piss. I did this with a 2 liter plastic bottle once, bought it then put it in the return machine, it had some sort of puncture function so air could escape if cap was on so it didn't totally choke the machine but it sprayed and hissed and cracked me up. Well worth the $.50 for a generic 2L.

You take the SNAP card and buy steak with it, then you sell the steak in the projects at 50 cents on the dollar and buy crack with the profits.
I have a tenant who had $300 worth of steak go bad when his freezer door would not close because he had too much steak in it. He gets $640 a month in disability.....buys his steak from the crackies.

Back in the olden days, you used to go to the government building to pick up your food. You got a box filled with cheese, beans, rice, milk and whatever other staples were handed out. It might not be a bad idea to go back to that system. Nobody would want to be on food assistance any longer than absolutely necessary, but they wouldn't starve.

I know the article says the damage is over $250, but most models crush each can, so you'd have soda spraying all over the interior of the machine. It might even be cheaper just to replace the machine.
As an old mechanical engineer who got to work for a vending machine company for a year almost two decades ago - the machines are probably designed to handle a certain amount of liquid per cycle. And by cycle, I mean servicing cycle. After all, you can't assume every can is empty and washed out. It's possible the crushing mechanism was damaged by repeated full cans, but I doubt it. That's the first thing they would test if it was a public facing unit. For something like that, you favor power and customer satisfaction over efficiency. It probably just crushed the cans repeatedly until someone stopped her, and then they realized she'd made a goddamn huge mess.
I'd guess the $250 is for a guy to come in and pressure wash the machine to make sure there wasn't residual gunk.
I got to work on what eventually became the "robot" machine you see these days that runs a platform up to your drink bottle and then drops it down a slide on the side of the machine. Even while I was working on it, the design assumption was that at any given time the shelf immediately above the product requested had somehow imploded and sprayed soda (read "glue") all over the next shelf down. Those machines could probably tow a boat with the extra power they have in reserve. The can crush machines do the same.
