The 1800 election was supposed to be incredibly vicious. From Wiki:

Replace a couple of names in there, and you have this election. From people who have studied it, nothing yet has topped the 1800 election in viciousness. I think this one will.

dukwbutter: How do they predict these solar storms? If all electromagnetic waves travel at the speed of light in a vacuum, then it seems to me that we wouldn't see the solar flares until they reached earth, at which time, it would be too late to predict them, right?

The plasma emitted from a CME doesn't travel at the speed of light. It typically takes 3-4 days to reach the Earth (hence the warning).
