Population of Tehran : 12,000,000.

Sounds like an even handed response.

GAT_00: MaudlinMutantMollusk: Fire off a sternly worded letter, eh?

I've never gotten this. Until recent history, countries didn't invade each other over what happened to a random person. Diplomacy has always been abstract things like trade sanctions and talking. And guess what? It works. Americans can't handle the idea that you can interact with another country without bombing it though.

Diplomacy works when both side aren't evil.

Your comment about Americans is off by a huge margin.

I think you may be confusing liberal's desire to not spend a crapload of money to see a bunch of innocent people (on both sides) get killed with "defend(ing) this shiathole country".

Can't wait to see Iran's response when the US, Canada and European countries start to issue travel warnings about Iran because of the American visiting his dying grandmother who they accused of spying and now this guy. Whoops, looks like the US already has (new window).

Canada has a travel warning in place too, and has since last November at the latest (unlinkable gov't page says Dec 1st was last page update but no threat level change was made).

You think a lot of Canadians, Americans, or Europeans travel to Iran now?

Too bad he's in Iran, where they generally just hang people.

jst3p: Last week, the Iranian Supreme Court confirmed the death sentence for computer programmer Saeed Malekpour, whose photography program was used without his knowledge, to upload pornography to the internet.

How is it that these backwards pieces of shiat refuse to be dragged into the 20th century? I just don't understand how they can look at the progress made around them and decide "nah, we will continue to kill people for dirty pictures."

For the same reasons the backwards pieces of shiat in our country refuse to progress. Fear, religion, power, money, etc, etc.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand is not a just random person.

I was pretty much going to post that word for word.

And besides, they were going to war anyway. Any excuse would have worked.

Not cool Iran. Not cool at all. Kinda on par for the course lately though...but executing a Canadian? That's not going to earn you any friends or goodwill.

Yes, I'm sure their despotic rulers would be eaten first.

This sucks, that poor dude is probably going to be killed (just like lots of Iranians), and Iran has become such a pariah state we don't have any more leverage. Not that our gov't lifted a finger to help Zehra Kazemi either (no, don't Google that, it's depressing).

I'm thinking its time to coordinate a little Presidential Order violating.

Just so we have it ready when the time comes.

When your women are as hot as Persian women often are, well, it helps.

Was waiting for that response, thank you.

Satanic_Hamster: Eh. This wouldn't exactly be the first Canadian citizen Iran would have executed or murdered in prison.

I can't stress this enough: If you have citizenship in any Western country, don't travel to Iran. Even if it's to see your dying father, even if they invite you, just don't enter the country. They pull this crap with a couple people a year.

That sucks, I really want to see Persepolis someday.
