So much WTF with that.

2012-01-24 01:22:08 PM
Asinine. How does the average citizen feel comfortable living day to day in a place like that?

2012-01-24 01:29:29 PM

Iran's version of SOPA I guess?

Fire off a sternly worded letter, eh?

2012-01-24 01:39:48 PM
The Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird is reported to have condemned the Supreme Court's decision, but there is little practical means of challenging this order outside Iran, because the Canadian Foreign Minister is John Baird.

Now the paragraph is complete.

See that Canada? Iran is on to you.

2012-01-24 01:45:36 PM
Well you can see Iran's point. Photo programs can be used to reproduce weapons of mass destruction.

MaudlinMutantMollusk: Fire off a sternly worded letter, eh?

I've never gotten this. Until recent history, countries didn't invade each other over what happened to a random person. Diplomacy has always been abstract things like trade sanctions and talking. And guess what? It works. Americans can't handle the idea that you can interact with another country without bombing it though.

More to the point, Iran isn't likely to care what Canada has to say

/that and Canadians are just too darn nice to do much else

It's called diplomacy. The reason for the sanctions is because Iran ignored the letters. And those sanctions are working. Iran's economy is cratering.

Well, its working on the general public. Then comes how this translates into how this works on the country. Thats unknown right now. Plus, Russia, China and India are still wild cards here.

there is something wrong with slobbing the knob of asshole genocidal totalitarian farkwits.

Kazan: this thread is supposed to be about iran, not about how a certain person in this thread slobs fascist theocracy's knobs because he happens to like them.

or how someone else likes making lots of gay references in threads about that fascist theocracy.

Its nuts. This is politically connected. Watch for the negotiations to ensue. Mr Saeed Malekpour isn't dead yet, and the political maneuvering over this shiatty situation isn't over, either.

Note I said random person, not just any person. Going to war for farking with the royalty is normal. Going to war for killing an Average Joe is not.

Admins, thanks for fixing the headline from

to

This would be a lot more serious if Saeed Malekpour was just killed.

You know, at this point, I think what we (as the international community) should do is simply close the Strait of Hormuz ourselves. Take away their bargaining chip and starve the country of funds and investments and oil revenues.

You gotta get the Russians, Chinese, and Indians on board with that one. Not sure the Euros would like the idea of the effect on the Iranian population.

So basically we just need to find a way to surreptitiously upload porn to all the Supreme Cleric's blackberries.

2012-01-24 05:04:10 PM
Eh. This wouldn't exactly be the first Canadian citizen Iran would have executed or murdered in prison.

I can't stress this enough: If you have citizenship in any Western country, don't travel to Iran. Even if it's to see your dying father, even if they invite you, just don't enter the country. They pull this crap with a couple people a year.

Depends on who they are replaced with.

Last week, the Iranian Supreme Court confirmed the death sentence for computer programmer Saeed Malekpour, whose photography program was used without his knowledge, to upload pornography to the internet.

How is it that these backwards pieces of shiat refuse to be dragged into the 20th century? I just don't understand how they can look at the progress made around them and decide "nah, we will continue to kill people for dirty pictures."

2012-01-24 05:17:50 PM
Also it sounds like they want to accept gold for payment of their oil. Saddam did this too and got freedomized.

We need a good terror attack to whip the country into a war frenzy.

And how long/badly it disrupts oil and gas from Iran, their satellite Azerbaijan, Iraq (where the majority of the population is Shia and will raise a Shia-tstorm), and the oil ports upstream of Hormuz. Yeah, the EU isn't buying Iranian oil, but it's all fungible.

They have a few actual friends in the immediate region. China and Russia find the current status useful in their chess games. But, mostly people prefer the regime to $200/bbl oil.

Wait, Iran announced this last week in retaliation for sanctions announced yesterday? Clearly the bigger problem is that they've got either a time machine or precognitive abilities.
