Let me sum up Bill Maher: Stoned blowhard. Bill-O for lightweight liberals.

// used to like listening to him rip Republicans, but if he can't be bothered to learn about SOPA and his whole argument style is "I'm smarter than you are, thats why you suck" then pretty much he's useless.

Good riddance asshat.

2012-01-24 10:41:19 AM
F*ck off asshole.

So his argument style only works for you when he's ripping republicans?

I see.

I like his show but he's completely wrong on this one. His panel let him know it.

Dusk-You-n-Me: I like his show but he's completely wrong on this one. His panel let him know it.

He's often wrong. Watching P.J. O'Rourke talk him down after a particularly tin-foily diatribe about a conspiracy between food manufacturers and the health care industry was one of the strangest things I've seen on that show, especially considering the amount of drugs Maher admits to doing.

2012-01-24 11:10:21 AM
Maher often has really intelligent opinions, but every so often he says some stupid shiat that reminds me why I don't watch his show. This, plus his drug industry conspiracy theories. Also, he doesn't believe in germ theory. Srsly.

That and the always-applauding audience. If they edited out the applause, the show would be 15 minutes long.

2012-01-24 11:25:31 AM
Of course he's for SOPA/PIPA. He has "movies" and other such "digital media" that exists where "piracy" "rips" into his "profits".

Honestly, I'm more suprised when a hollywood type is AGAINST these bills...because in their minds, being for it = more money, which is all these assholes give a fark about.

2012-01-24 11:33:31 AM
iStig: Maher often hardly ever has really intelligent opinions, but every so often usually he says some stupid shiat that reminds me why I don't watch his show.

FTFY

That and the always-applauding audience. If they edited out the applause, the show would be 15 minutes long.

If they didn't have the clapping and howling, the people watching wouldn't know when to approve of what he said.

Bill Maher is part of the entertainment industry. Of course he's going to side with the entertainment industry.
He's also not exactly savvy when it comes to technology. I distinctly recall him dismissing email as "the CB radio of the '90s".

2012-01-24 11:43:17 AM
To be fair, he was just quoting dozens of American officials elected to high office.

This pretty much all around.

I used to like Politically Incorrect, but mostly for the guests. I always thought Maher was kind of a blowhard, and he's only gotten even more full of himself since.

This just in: Bill Maher is a self-absorbed douche

/another victim of Dennis Miller syndrome

I like Bill Maher. He's a smart guy and he's one of the few liberal celebrities that will toss politeness aside and spout off what everybody else is thinking. But just like anyone else, he's occasionally way off the mark and needs to be put in his place.

2012-01-24 12:49:26 PM
He thinks he's smarter than you? He's self-absorbed? He's full of himself?

These are good reasons to not vote for someone for prom king but they're stupid reasons to dislike a comedian.

You want a good reason to dislike Bill Maher? His opening monologue. I love the panel discussion and 'New Rules'... but... that monologue...

Why not? All of that shows through in his act, and it makes him less funny. Also makes him less informative, which is a shame since he fancies himself a pundit.

This.

He thinks religious people are stupid because they ignore science and then he opens his mouth about his stupid "health beliefs".

There is about as much scientific evidence for the existence of god as there is the pseudo-medical dribble he supports.

I still watch the show. He amuses me sometimes.

2012-01-24 01:24:27 PM
I watched this live, and was really uncomfortable when he was saying that. He was all pissed off about his film being pirated.

He totally missed the point of why the bill was opposed, he thinks people just want free stuff. The fact is that SOPA would do nothing to stop piracy, so I don't even see why it would help him.

2012-01-24 01:28:33 PM
Dusk-You-n-Me: I like his show but he's completely wrong on this one. His panel let him know it.

Yeah, I was watching with a friend. We paused it after his initial pro-SOPA + ignorance statement and went on for a few minutes about how stupid and lazy it was of him to comment forcefully on something that he had JUST admitted that he hadn't read and didn't know anything about. We resumed after hoping that at least one of the panelists would stand up and tell him he was wrong. Thankfully, all three did. Maher's continued response was pretty much, "well, piracy hurt my movie's sales and people are against SOPA/PIPA because they want free stuff."

devek: I watched this live, and was really uncomfortable when he was saying that. He was all pissed off about his film being pirated.

As supposedly smart and "libertarian" as he is, you'd think he'd come up with a better business model for distributing his film than the outdated, piracy prone one he chose.

Kyro: I like Bill Maher. He's a smart guy and he's one of the few liberal celebrities that will toss politeness aside and spout off what everybody else is thinking. But just like anyone else, he's occasionally way off the mark and needs to be put in his place.

At least he has guests who actually disagree with him - and they're not even remote, so he can't just cut off their video feed.

I wonder when a conservative talk show host will do that on a regular basis.

2012-01-24 01:32:06 PM
I watched this episode. First one I saw since his show was on Comedy Central. Last episode I'll watch for awhile. I agree with him on some things, but saying people were against SOPA just cause they wanted to steal shiat? Idiotic.

2012-01-24 01:32:25 PM
Fun to watch.
Talks about subjects that I like to hear about.
Can go off on a rant.
Can be completely wrong.
Can be militant.

But, considering that there are 9 to 1 conservative media pundits to his libertarian/progressive,
it's nice to get a different kind of spit and bile diatribe every Friday.

2012-01-24 01:35:20 PM
This and his whole vaccine thing makes me not respect the guy anymore. I found him funny some time back but those opinions of his give me such headaches.

He is 100% ok with liberty and justice until he thinks it might reduce the amount of money he can make.

To assume there aren't some people opposed to it for precisely that reason is also incorrect.

2012-01-24 01:38:27 PM
Bill Maher is for Bill Maher and no one else. He can't be impartial. On any topic at any time, if the outcome doesn't stand to directly affect Bill Maher, he can usually be trusted to come up with a logical, evenhanded argument.

But if, for example, he was told his catered lunch would either be ready an hour late, or he could have it on time but an innocent man would have to be put to death in order to make it happen, I'd expect him to ask for his lunch to be ready on time.

Billie Maher jumped the shark in early 2009.

He is the ultimate hipster. Whenever something gets popular, he's against it and goes for whatever the unpopular/non-establishment opinion is. Without fail. And if that gets popular, he dumps that opinion and finds something else less popular.

Likewise, most people who illegally steal content will be against anything that impedes them from illegally stealing content.

Well, you can hardly blame him. It's basically stealing money from him. Do you realize how expensive it is to keep chilled champagne flowing through a crystal fountain? Brotha's gotta eat - even if it costs the livelihood of millions.

He said he didn't read the Bill. He's against piracy so he is technically in favour of legislation that would prevent that. The disclaimer is right there. He is not saying it doesn't go too far or that it is not poorly written and can't be abused. He's saying he supports legislation that stops piracy plus he is being "edgy" and "controversial" which is a good way to get some free publicity when launching your new season.

Bill Maher's popularity reminds me of the time Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha tried to conquor the city of Astrakhan to repel the Cossack invasions but was stymied by the resistance he received and had to pull back in shame.

Bill Maher has been owned by many guests and you have to respect him for having guests that disagree with him and letting them actually debate him (successfully sometimes). Plus, he invites them back.

As an American, you likely live a quality of life much higher than a vast majority of the world.

I hardly doubt you would find solace in that if someone stole your car tonight.
