obviously, we should pass MORE laws against drunk driving. Because that'll help, right?

Wisconsin judges DUI with a bunch of guys holding scorecards up.

0.08, 0.09, 0.099, 0.06...

You always get screwed over by the Russian judge.

has a drunken driving record that spans four states - Wisconsin, Minnesota, Florida and Colorado - and dates back to 1991, according to the complaint.

Pfft. 11 DUI's in Wisconsin is about right for someone who's this guy's age. DUI's are a right of passage for Wisconsinites, and the main source of taxes for the government.

Hey, some states have oil revenue, we have DUI fines.

Should've shot him after the 5th one.

It's Wisconsin, it's like a hobby up there. Plus the pop density is low.

This guy has proven he can't make responsible decisions. We can't tolerate loose cannons like this. Just lock him up for good.

/I'm not cruel, though. As far as I'm concerned he can have booze delivered to him in jail

pffft they had the one guy here in OKC that had like 13 here a few months back. funny thing is a city councilman was pulled over for dui second offense. the comments on the station's facebook page were priceless.
"councilman so and so is suffering from a disease and needs help, hang in there guy" keep in mind these are the same people who want to hang the guys like the one in this story or the guy from OKC with 13 offenses.

/personally the only way they are going to curb this is make the penalty for dui a firing squad or something else draconian

They WANT people like this. They're a constant flow of money. If stopping drunk drivers was about keeping the roads safe, you would lose your license permanently on the 2nd or 3rd DUI.

If we really want justice and safety, the money must be taken out of law enforcement. (as in law enforcement shouldn't be a means of gathering revenue. They should be funded well enough without the need to excessively fine. Fines should go to other government projects such as the DOT)

When I was a prosecutor, I found that the majority of DUI offenders did not have licenses anyway.

I really do love my state. But I hate how our drinking culture just gets a pass for DUI here in WI.

Ugh.

If the present laws aimed at preventing drunk driving don't eliminate the problem, then what do you think should be done?

gut most of DUI laws currently on the books. repeat offenders aren't intimidated by jail terms or administrative tricks. locking them up just delays them a bit.

put them through re-hab. it won't work the first time. might not work the second either. But eventually it WILL work. and it's still cheaper than putting them in jail.

Isn't wisconsin where a DUI is about as significant of a charge as jaywalking?

Agreed, as long as the rehab is not Alcoholics Anonymous or any other 12-step program.

The first DWI, you lose your license.
The second DWI you lose your car.
The third DWI you go to jail.

Simple solution, if only our politicians could grow a pair, this problem would go away.

Not holding my breath.

To be fair, cruising through WI's court records indicate that the last time he was arrested in WI for drunk driving was in 1996. Looks like there is some significant blame to share, here.

Other than the losing your car part, current DUI laws are way more draconian.

In many places:

sleep it off in your car = DUI

How farking asinine is that? We should be punishing people for committing the offense, and do everything in our power to prevent inebriated folks from moving the car.

I think we can work out the details without too much issue. we need to assess who's an alcoholic and put them into a treatment plan. what we do NOT need to do is make DUI laws more restrictive or smack the hammer down on people who get tipsy once or twice a year and think they're ok to drive when they're not.

DUI laws assume that anyone who drives close to whatever arbitrary limit they're using these days is a james bond villain and will end all life in the universe as we know it. that's just not true, and it's the wrong way to address the problem.

Came here to say "THIS", minus the big about "when I was a prosecutor". Depending on the severity of the DUI (like did someone get injured or even die), many DUI offenders around here DO lose their licenses (while complaining bitterly that the government is limiting their ability to work, their "right" to drive, etc.) then they go out, booze it up and total another vehicle without bothering with little things like a driver's license (insurance, whatever).

/idiots are going to be idiots
//short of locking people up, or installing a breathalyzer in every vehicle that must be used before the ignition will work, there is no guaranteed way of stopping this kind of behaviour
///would NEVER advocate the breathalyzer idea, penalizing the rest of us for a few drunken asshats is not fair

According to the regulations, this guy is facing up to $25,000 in fines and 4-12.5 year in prison.

Of course, he should have spent about 8 years in prison already just getting to this point. But, that would be if all of his arrests were under the current law and all within WI. The article states that his arrest were more widespread than that.

Which is why there's a huge cheesehead population in Florida. The state doesn't want to bother with the expense of extraditing anyone.

If this state wanted to get serious about this kind of thing, they'd make the third DUI punishable with a lifetime driving ban plus a ban on operating motorboats, snowmobiles, ATVs, etc.

Okay, now I've gotten sort of creepily obsessed. Looks like Mr. Hennington racked up five DWIs in Minnesota over a period of three years (2003-2006), as well as sometimes-hilarious other charges (fleeing a police officer - other than vehicle). WTF, Minnesota?

True, I see a lot of people pull in to my work in cars and produce state ID cards instead of drivers licenses when they want to get a library card.

No one should ever have 1 DUI. But things do happen, you think you're cool but you blew a .8. It happens and you need the shiat scared out of you when it does. Be it jail and big fines. They need at minimum 5 years probation. Make sure the threat of jail is always hanging over their head.

If that doesn't stop a person, and they get a 2nd DUI, then they've proven they can't ever get behind the wheel.

They must have some pretty dipshiat laws in Wisconsin. In Florida you'd be in prison too long to be able to get that many. Of course FL DUI laws are pretty draconian.

This is Wisconsin. They probably said "sorry for inconveniencing you, sir; here's your license back. Why don't I escort you to the next bar."

I did that once. After a buddy's bachelor party. It was a nice summer night, a cop came up to my car and asked if I was drunk. I replied yes, he asked where my keys were. I replied, under the car. He didn't like how smart I was about sleeping it off in my car, but yes, there are ways around that.

Mostly because DUI's are still just a municipal violation; on par with a parking ticket. On the other hand if you have a passenger under the age of 16 or do property damage the balgame changes, but that's only been on the books since 2011 IIRC.

/I beleive the state record holder is at 17 DUI's

Part of the issue is the MADD lobby. It used to be that .15 was "drunk. then it was .10... now it's .08

A career drinker at .09 is probably safer than a sober teen scrolling through the tracks on her ipod. it long ago stopped being about "are you impaired" and became about "does this box display the correct number so we can arrest you"

This. The "revenge" culture of US criminal legislation is not helping.

/also letting people with multiple DUI's plea down to minimum jail time or suspension of license doesn't help

Yeah, in FL the second will get you 10 days in the clink and 5 years suspension. The 3rd is a felony and I just imagine it goes up from there. They're psycho about arrests though. You don't even have to be in your car or have it be running to get one.

/no never got one personally

Not that one should drive drunk but I'm sure half the farkers on here coulda gotten peg'd with 11 if they got caught every time. .08 is a joke for most people who drink on the reg. Plus they can get you even if you blow lower, by saying you were still impaired. Now you need to spend a few thousand fighting it in court. .20 like this guy on the other hand is farking high. You'll pass out, as he did and do who knows what to yourself or others... so don't do that shiat. Still it's just as dangerous driving tired and even you teetotalers have done that.
