FTFA Due primarily to the impact of previously announced non-cash pension items, Verizon reported a loss of 71 cents in EPS in fourth-quarter 2011, compared with earnings of 93 cents per share in fourth-quarter 2010.

which it attributed to noncash pension charges and high costs associated with selling the Apple iPhone.

Verizon's been selling the iPhone for almost a year....

The article points out the iPhone will always be a drain on Verizon's profits because Verizon subsidizes new iPhone contracts by selling the hardware cheap. The problem is Apple comes out with a new iPhone before the subsidy costs are recouped by data and voice plan charges. The new phone requires new subsidies. And so it goes on and on.

If Apple held off on new models for a while longer, Verizon would profit.

Bingo. Leeching of subsidy is huge. I expect this is what's really behind the data caps and rate hikes. It doesn't cost VZW anything close to $50 to pass 5gb of data. They're trying to find ways of recouping the massive subsidy.

This doesn't really matter because customers are generally locked into their plans for 2 years as a result of the subsidy agreement. I think breaking contract is up to $400 prorated monthly from the start of the 2 year contract.

Even the $400 contract thing probably doesn't pay for everything...

Welcome to Fark? You should know headlines are meant to be funny, sarcastic, misleading, and quite often troll.

Screw Verizon, ready to drop them and go back to TMo. Never been so unhappy with a phone company as I have been in the last month.

so an iphone is $650 new in retail. assuming they have a year to make up the 450 (they charged 200 to buy it, we'll ignore the 50 bucks to activate and fees.) 450/12= $37.5

but you have more than a year, and nobody's bill is less that 37.5, and there is no way they pay $650 a handset... no i am guessing they take a loss only during the initial investment (launch day) and quickly make it back and more.

companies are NOT trying to have razor thin margins, they will charge as much as they can regardless of the cost. right now, people will pay a lot of money for data, that goes in the profits margin, not the "we can charge less now" margin.

Do Verizon subscribers get a new phone at a fully subsidized price every year? On AT&T, I think it's closer to every two years. They'll move up your upgrade schedule if they think it'll lock you in for another two years, though.

Also, it seems like I hear about a new, must-have Android phone every quarter. Why single out Apple's iPhone for coming out with a new model once a year?

No, upgrade eligibility begins after 20 months into a two year contract. However, you can use the eligibility of other lines on your account. So if your mom is on your plan and doesn't need to replace her old feature phone you can use her eligibility.

Also, Verzon actually made several billion dollars in 4Q. A non-cash actuarial adjustment created the EPS write down. It is meaningless. Verizon makes tons of money.

Yeah well at least the iPhone doesn't automatically add the telephone numbers of every single one of your Facebook friends and doesn't allow you to delete them even though it has no problem deleting the numbers you actually use when you upgrade the OS.
