I like what he's saying for the most part, especially the part about vitamin supplements being possibly more of a problem than a solution.

Based on subby's headline, I was waiting for an article full of pseudo-scientific babble about organic bee pollen and positive thoughts. Was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the article.
While I think the "proof" presented is a bit weak, I suspect he might be on to something. The problem is proving it. Is consistently sitting for 4 hours more dangerous than cigarettes? Who knows, but good luck developing a statistically valid proof.
Two problems I see: First, there really isn't a lot of money to be made by promoting "walking around while talking on the phone", so no one is going to be in a hurry to fund the kinds of research studies needed to prove any of this. And second, the theories presented will be jumped on by every feel-good quack on the planet to sell us karma-correcting herbal remedies.

I think the scariest thing about cancer is that it can hit so randomly, even to people who exercise, eat right, etc.
I had a professor in college that ran daily and watched what he ate. Really seemed like one of the healthiest guys I knew. He was diagnosed with cancer in January and died in March.
Scary to think that if he can pass away so rapidly, what happens to someone that doesn't take care of themself?

Same here. Much of what the article says isn't news to people in the cancer and free radical chemistry fields, and the data has been in for decades that vitamin supplements are a waste. Stay active, eat real food, and you've dramatically increased your chances of a longer, but also higher quality lifespan. This ain't rocket surgery.

Cure for cancer:
1. Drink, eat, do drugs in moderation
2. Fark as much as possible
3. Have fun and enjoy life
4. Don't worry about cancer, since it is only one of thousands of possible causes our your eventual demise.

In terms of a mild anti-inflammatory.
I'm guessing that most of the people taking that much aspirin probably shouldn't? I don't really know, thankfully not being that old yet. :)

I enjoyed the article since it didn't seem to have a specific product from a specific company plugged as the answer (statin drugs aside I suppose). All I know is this: I sit at work and have now for 7 years. Sitting makes me feel lazy, makes me fat, and has to be bad for my health overall. Before 7 years ago I was a bartender, always moving, walking, standing, etc, and I felt great (though I drank too much obviously). Sitting is the worst.
The only good idea Donald Rumsfeld had was that he uses a "Standing Desk". It was more like a flat-topped podium that he used as a desk. I would totally use one if my boss paid for it (or even allowed it; I would pony up the cash), and would even accept the incredible amounts of ridicule it would bring.

i can't agree with the doctor's feeling on vitamins. the few people i know who care about health, eat well, do some exercise and take the time to educate themselves about supplements all enjoy excellent health. they look younger than their age as well.
working in concert with a medical professional that is well versed in a supplement lifestyle is key from what i've seen.

Unless you have a standing desk that is completely bad for your back since you need to bend over to type, use a mouse, write on paper, etc. Standing desk makes every at a height where you can stand up straight while continuing to work. I've requested a stand up desk and was denied (even though I was up for desk replacement they just got me a normal desk).
I have three days off a week though where I hardly sit at all since I'm cleaning/working on projects/running errands/etc.

People need to realize that doctors are full of opinions too and many of them develop followings, mainly of people who simply like what they hear. The only doctor I'd consider following would be one who counts lots of other doctors among his/her followers. I don't see many of these people as being any different than a televangelist.

This doctor is an annoying mix of common sense and trolling to plug his book.
I know two classes of pill-poppers: health nuts who take them as part of a well-intentioned if somewhat neurotic lifestyle, and slobs who compensate for eating junk food. And surprise surprise, the former look younger for their age.
One other thing -- I don't dispute the health advantages of a routine. Most people with routines seem healthier and live longer. However, they are also very vulnerable to disruptions in the routine.
Basically, don't live to excess. One-a-day is benign and probably beneficial; he's probably referring to idiots who take hyperdoses of Vitamin C just because they were told it's an antioxidant. Staying active is good for your health, but guess what's super-bad for you? Poverty.
Life's a game of balance and trade-offs. Don't try to cheat.

I think it's just general lack of motion in any one part of the body. The body even instinctively tosses and turns several times a night to keep blood circulating. A lot of people tend to fidget when seated, and I think that's an evolutionary response.
I do OK sitting a desk because one thing our office got right was big desks and wheeled chairs. I also have a habit of constantly shifting from cross-legged to legs down. Put me on a plane, though, and within two hours I feel like a wrung-out wet rag. The human body just isn't designed to stay that motionless.

Its because lots of cancers have really, really high genetic risk factors. I'm doing some genome sequencing work to identify the causal gene in a few familial cancer and tumour diseases that are pretty nasty. And my mother's side of the family carries a BRCA2 mutation that ups a female carriers risk of breast cancer to something like >60% as well as severely elevated risk of prostate cancer in men.

Cancer isn't one disease, it is a whole group of hundreds to thousands of distinct varieties that only share ONE phenotypic trait, abnormal cellular reproduction. Lots of cancers ARE effectively curable if caught early.
And for the people knocking his knock on vitamins. This doctor is part of the push for personalized genomic medicine in a big way. One of the ways this will help is because we are learning about some of the underlying causes for variability in response to certain behaviours and interventions. His point is that vitamin evidence is actually wildly variable and really good well controlled studies don't support much, if any benefit, and there are known harms to taking too much of many vitamins. No one has established what an appropriate dose is and it is probable that it would be highly dependent on your genetics, lifestyle, and existing diet. That said I'm not anti-vitamin. I think for the most part it won't hurt and for people with certain conditions or risk factors it may be a good idea. But for the majority of people, probably not necessary at all.

I exercise daily and have taken vitamins that have noticeably increased performance and vitamins that have done nothing. I know that's not science, but I don't think it's all that scientific to stop taking anything at all when a few high profile studies just say not to take a multi either.
Almost everything is harder to "prove" then they're letting on. Just look at the track record of the scientific consensus on eggs and honestly tell me they're
sure

and if a child does it in class, they are labeled as "ADD" and need to be thrown on mind-altering drugs to "calm them down", nevermind the fact that it's never been normal for a human being to sit still in a chair for an extended period of time.
