Elephants never forget.
And they never forgive.
Actually, that poses an interesting question. Since the calf died during a scan (i.e. while people are around), are the elephants aggrieved with their human keepers now and believe that they killed the calf? Or do they realize that it was done while attempting to save it?

If they stampede we'll have the answer.

Tears are welling up in my eyes as I write this because I find this story almost too much to bear following the incident at the weekend where we found a grey squirrel dead in our local woods. My family was inconsolable and my husband wept openly all day Sunday. That evening my cousin in Australia called to tell me that they had spotted a dead baby kangaroo by the roadside last year. I couldn't stop crying thinking about it all day yesterday. It's the inhumanity of it all. When will we learn?

Not knocking the sentiment, but I think the sadness is associated with that they (the other elephants) recognize death. They have a knowledge of its passing.
Is that not a bit different than most animals?

They know the calf was sick and they know when they are sick and go off with the keepers they get help.
If the keepers have never shown to be ugly to them they will understand.
Elephants are really, really smart!

Depends on the animal. Rabbits, chickens, and cows don't have the brainpower to notice that anything's different.
Dogs certainly miss a friend, as do horses. Don't know that they understand death, but they miss and mourn a lost companion.
Same for exotic birds. Lovebirds often die if their mate dies. A cockatoo, macaw, or parrot will very much miss a friend.
I think it depends on how social a species is.

I would agree because you're right but we have push all these animals to where they have no where to go so the zoo may be the only place to see them very soon. Very Sad

At times like this I wonder if we are sad because we are just anthropomorphizing the elephant. Or is it because we realize that we are just animals too and are comprehending how small the differences are between us?

Humans captured us in the wild, Chief. We was comin' back from the grasslands of f Kenya... just visited the graveyard. The Elephant Graveyard. Eleven hundred in the herd. Herd scattered in less'n 12 minutes. Didn't see the first humamn for about a half an hour. White. 6-footer. You know how you know that when you're caught on the ground in a net, Chief? You tell by looking at the size of their feet. What we didn't know, was our graveyard visit had been so secret, no ultrasound distress signal had been sent. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, humans...zookeepers come cruisin', so we formed ourselves into tight groups. You know, it was kinda like old squares in the battle like you see in the calendar named "The Battle of Waterloo" and the idea was: zookeeper comes to the nearest elephant, that elephant he starts poundin' and hollerin' and screamin' and sometimes the zookeeper will go away... but sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that zookeeper he looks right into ya. Right into your eyes. And, you know, the thing about a zookeeper... he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be living... until he picks ya for his zoo...and those eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. The plains turns dark, and despite all the poundin' and the hollerin', they all come in and they... pick the best specimens for their zoos. You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred elephants. I don't know how many zookeepers, maybe a dozen. I know how many elephants, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday morning, Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, a calf...named Lola. Weak heart. I thought she was asleep. I reached over to wake her up. She lay lifeless, down on the ground. Well, she'd been taken by the zookeepers and returned a bit later. Noon, the fifth day, Mr. Hooper, a photographer human saw us. He swung in low and he saw us... he was a young photographer, a lot younger than Mr. Hooper. Anyway, he saw us and he come in low and three hours later a big fat Daily Mail story with pictures gets printed. Showing how the zookeepers killed our own and taunted us with it. You know that was the time I was most frightened... waitin' for the humanity. I'll never make another trip to the graveyard again. So, eleven hundred elephants went on the journey; 316 elephants escaped, zookeepers took the rest, January 20th, 2012. Anyway, we visited Aunt Ethel's bones.
