Let's preemptively kick the conspiracy theory in the nards.

The Ravens, of course, could have made all this confusion moot by calling a timeout. Instead, coach John Harbaugh decided to let Cundiff run on the field and kick.

2012-01-24 07:54:14 AM
More importantly, Harbaugh didn't call a time-out to give his team time to set up. I can't blame Cundiff for that.

/clock management Andy Reid could be proud of

A wormhole opened up, and in the universe where the Ravens win, he made the kick and the Ravens won in overtime. However, in this universe, the Patriots won, as instability in the space time continuum caused to ball to ever so slightly angle away from the inside of the posts.

2012-01-24 07:58:44 AM
I say the Pats cheated.

2012-01-24 08:00:31 AM
He has only one job to do. And he failed at doing it.

Doesn't have to tackle anyone, doesn't get tackled. Doesn't even have to catch a ball. Just kick the ball through the goalposts. That's it. He probably doesn't even have to drive himself to practice because he might hurt his foot on the accelerator.

Hundreds of other guys tried out for the job of NFL kicker. He got the job. He could practice all year long. And he still couldn't do it right.

Contract negotiations should be interesting next year.

2012-01-24 08:00:46 AM
I don't think this really has any weight, he just missed due to being rushed, be it because of downs or time. It's the coach's job to respond to confusion like this and he didn't.

Cundiff has responsability to take for missing and Harbaugh for not calling a timeout.

2012-01-24 08:05:08 AM
It wasn't really just a miss. It was more like a Shankapotamous or something. He would have had to work to miss more than that.

2012-01-24 08:07:20 AM
I think it was a good non-timeout by Harbaugh.

Timeouts are important, you can't just go wasting them on something silly like a field goal attempt to tie the game and save your season. He might have needed it for something really important in the remaining 10 seconds.

2012-01-24 08:16:49 AM
sorry, it was my fault. Right after half time, Cundiff asked me to punch him as hard as I could in the stomach

2012-01-24 08:22:01 AM
When is Ray Lewis going to retire?

2012-01-24 08:23:35 AM
I give Harbaugh credit for saving those timeouts for next season. When other coaches are wasting theirs, he's stock-piling his for the following season.

You've got to love that kind of forethought.

Remember ten years ago when the Ravens won the Superbowl? When their defense was so good, they could afford to lateral the ball several times after an interception or forced fumble?

That's how they finished the Superbowl this year. It was awesome. Ed Reed picked it off, Chris Carr ran it back about 65 yards (boy, did that make up for a lot of errors this season!), and Ray Lewis pounded it into the end zone. Ray rice had 7 carries of over 80 yards each, and Flacco broke every individual game passing record IN THE FIRST HALF.

Unfortunately, after the game I stumbled into an interdimensional time portal, and ended up here. I thought I had just traveled back in time, but when Cundiff missed that kick...Well, at least this world seems langolier-free, so it's got that going for it!

foo monkey: When is Ray Lewis going to retire?

Probably after Cundiff's body is found as part of a plea agreement.

2012-01-24 08:31:52 AM
He didn't know the down, and had to hurry, and then rushed the kick...

Maybe we should just hire professionals to play football so this kind of thing won't happen again?

2012-01-24 08:32:02 AM
It's all a bit of gamesmanship on Cundiff's part, actually. He doesn't want to acknowledge what really threw him off was me yelling "MMMMMMISS, MMMMMISS, NOOOONAN, NNNNNNNOOOOOONAN, MMMMMMMMISS" up in Section 326. Bastard doesn't want to admit I rattled him good...

Some of the stuff you guys may not have heard:

"I think we can keep things simple: It's a kick I've made a thousand times in my career, I just went out there and didn't convert. There's really no excuse for it." - Billy Cundiff

"I'm disappointed that I let my teammates down. Ray played his heart out. He's had a long career and you don't know how many years he has left. To let him down, it's pretty tough." - Billy Cundiff

"As a man, I said it earlier: Not one play won or lost this game. Could you have put us in a position to keep playing? Absolutely, but one play didn't win or lose the game. There is no one man who has ever lost a game. There is no 'it's Billy's fault' here or 'Billy missed the kick.' It happens. Move on, move on, because life doesn't stop." - Ray Lewis

"I told him it's going to be OK. We'll move on. He's a great kicker. Everybody has a tough moment. Billy will be fine." - John Harbaugh

Also as a bonus:
"Well, I sucked pretty bad today." - Tom Brady

Cundiff missed because he is Cundiff and therefore erratic. Which is why he's played for so many teams in such a short career. How he's played like 9 years with how he's played, man, I'll never know. No one who watched him play for the Cowboys could have possibly been surprised by that shank. But the look on the Raven's players, man, *that* was priceless.

Coaches are becoming more comfortable with 50+ yard kicks. You're not going to trade a 0% chance at 50+ yards for a slightly higher accuracy at 30- yards.

I actually thought Flacco played really well. Not perfect, but I wouldn't point to him as one of the main reasons that things went wrong. He made a great throw on the Evans drop so one could even argue that he was clutch.

He played OK, but that interception... I mean sure he's behind his line, arms in the air, but really!? That's as terrible an interception as a QB can throw if only because he put that ball exactly where he wanted to. That's all on him, and all of it inside his head. He had some other throws that didn't exactly demonstrate development either. Flacco plays better against a terrible Patriots secondary he could absolutely have been the guy that put his team on his back and carried them to victory. But he played somewhat less than Dilfer-esque. That good enough to keep working, but not good enough to get to the superbowl this year.

Well that'd be somewhere we could put Carli Lloyd where she wouldn't need to worry about blasting it over the net.

The interception was bad but that was really the only play that I found to be egregious. But I'm willing to excuse one fark-up per game with pretty much any QB. He also underthrew Smith on that bomb to set up the FG in the 1st half. It would've been a TD if he hadn't, but IIRC he was under pressure on that play.

But overall the Ravens got way more out of Flacco than I would have expected.

Plenty of blame to go around, but that is a suspicious scoreboard mistake and I would put nothing past the Pats. The spot markers on the field should also reflect the down, if they were right I can't imagine why the scoreboard was wrong.

It might not stop the kick, but it could help the defense, just ask Pierre-Paul

They kept showing Cundiff on the sidelines while the offense was still driving down into range and you could see all over his face there was no way he was ever going to make that kick, even if they set him up at the 2-yard line. The giant shiat in his pants threw him off balance.

I don't know if Seneca Wallace would have done better. But if he had, it wouldn't have surprised me. I'll agree that interception was Flacco's only truly terrible play, but it was maximally terrible from what it says about the quarterback. Went exactly where he wanted it, straight to a defender, and a LB at that. It wasn't even a super fast/agile corner making a play, or setting one up like Porter did to Reggie Wayne and Manning in that Superbowl. It's a throw that shouldn't be made in high school. For me to understand what he was thinking, he'd have to come out and admit he's blind in one eye, and he didn't want to say anything about it before so as to prevent the competition from getting an advantage over him, but since it's obvious now.... How Flacco isn't killing it every week with Bouldin, I'll never know. I'm just glad I only ever have to see that asshole every 4 years.

Tinfoil block the mind rays.

The markers were correct, but the confusion probably came from the fumble out of bounds. Where it left play was a first down, but it was properly spotted where possession was lost instead. The Ravens also thought they had a first to begin with.

Sounds like they were in on it!!!!!
