Oh, can we rip his heart out and lower him into a pit of lava now?

Things I find amusing about this:

1) They seem to think Jay Leno or Americans actually know something about them to make this some sort of personal, intentional attack. When, of course, the vast majority of Americans don't know they exist let alone care about personally attacking them and the building was probably chosen off of Google image search "gaudy building" or some such thing without knowing/caring about what it really was.

2) Once again a country wants to talk to the American government about something on a private show. They really just don't seem to get that the US government is not making/controlling day to day television shows/movies. Although, that does say something about the level of government control in the countries that make that mistake about the US. Like the State Department has ANYTHING to do with what's on the Tonight Show.

And that.

I'm all for religious tolerance but making a big deal over this just makes you look completely humorless.

But then again, so does watching Jay Leno...

That is the Golden Shrine? It's lit up like the B.C. Legislature Building.

Oh, well. They're probably both full of Sikhs in turbans and guys wearing jodphurs and scarlet Bengal Lancer uniforms.

Just goes to show that nothing good comes from having a Sikh sense of humor. :-/

The Golden Temple is, for those that remember, that building in India that Obama was going to visit, but the visit was cancelled when it was feared that people would think it was a mosque. 'Cuz he's a sekrit muslin and all...

But seriously, the Sikh extremists aren't ones to be trifled with; they brought down Air India 182 and assassinated Indira Gandhi, and are suspected of at least one journalist assassination in Canada...

2012-01-24 12:48:21 AM

Seeing as the Repugs keep equating Michelle Obama to Marie Antoinette, here's a more appropriate illustration that Leno should have used instead of the Golden Temple:

And here's an illustration of the reason why Newt Gingrich's Tiffany Account is so liberal:

If the Repugs weren't a bunch of hypocrites, Gingrich would be having his own little Affair of the Diamond Necklace.

The Sikh religion was an attempt to reconcile the beliefs of the Muslim and Hindu religions and thus bring peace between the religions. It is monotheistic, like Islam, and has many beliefs drawn from the common ideas of Hindu and Buddhism. The founder was born a Hindu but founded a religion which embraced many Muslim beliefs and values as well:. His career as a religion founder began with his statement: "There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim" (in Punjabi, "nā kōi hindū nā kōi musalmān")

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikhism

Wikipedia lists the prohibtions of the Sikh religion. Sound familiar?

There are a number of religious prohibitions in Sikhism:

Cutting hair: Cutting hair is strictly forbidden in Sikhism. Sikhs are required to keep unshorn hair.
Intoxication: Consumption of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, and other intoxicants is not allowed. Intoxicants are strictly forbidden for a Sikh.[46][47][48] However the Nihangs of Punjab take an infusion of cannabis to assist meditation.[49]
Adultery: In Sikhism, the spouses must be physically faithful to one another.[46][47][48][50]
Blind spirituality: Superstitions and rituals should not be observed or followed, including pilgrimages, fasting and ritual purification; circumcision; idols & grave worship; compulsory wearing of the veil for women; etc.
Material obsession: Obsession with material wealth is not encouraged in Sikhism.
Sacrifice of creatures: The practice of sati (widows throwing themselves on the funeral pyre of their husbands), ritual animal sacrifice to celebrate holy occasions, etc. are forbidden.
Non-family-oriented living: A Sikh is encouraged NOT to live as a recluse, beggar, yogi, monastic (monk/nun) or celibate. Sikhs are to live as saint-soldiers.
Worthless talk: Bragging, lying, slander, "back-stabbing", etc. are not permitted. The Guru Granth Sahib tells the Sikh, "Your mouth has not stopped slandering and gossiping about others. Your service is useless and fruitless."[51]
Priestly class: Sikhism does not have priests, they were abolished by Guru Gobind Singh (the 10th Guru of Sikhism).[52] The only position he left was a Granthi to look after the Guru Granth Sahib, any Sikh is free to become Granthi or read from the Guru Granth Sahib.[52]
Eating meat killed in a ritualistic manner (Kutha meat): Sikhs are strictly prohibited from eating meat killed in a ritualistic manner (such as halal or kosher, known as Kutha meat which the animal is killed slowly by ritually slicing the throat and letting it bleed while praying.[53] ), or any meat where langar is served.[54] The meat eaten by Sikhs is known as Jhatka meat.[55][56]
Having premarital or extramarital sexual relations[46][47][57][58]

If that doesn't remind you of Mormons, how about Nazarites or possibly Nazarenes?

If you could do it you would certainly have a lot of character and willpower. But at the same time it seems to scrape out all the bad parts of Muslims and Hindus and roll them into one as opposed to opening the religions up a bit.

Buddhism took Hindu mythology and did to it what Apple did the mp3 player. I mean, who'd have thought that 3000 years plus later any given ignorant teenager in a city far, far, far away in time and culture and geography like New York could give you a reasonably useful explanation of what Karma is. That's the Buddha's doing.

But as long as they don't expect me to sign off on it, I'm game. If push came to shove, I'd join the neo pagans. No one gets into Valhalla unless they die in battle, and even if it's all in our imaginations worshiping the old gods gets cakes and ale. I'm talkin' whole cakes and tankards, no Christ wafers and a sip of wine.

I get so fed up with everyone claiming to be offended and demanding apology. (new window)

You can all appreciate the funny side of me having to link to that rather than post it because it has a swear word in it and some of you fanny scratchers would be offended by that one little word.

Many of those only count for those Sikhs who've been baptized. Many Sikhs don't wear the turban, they cut their hair, drink alcohol, smoke tobacco, they don't wear daggers, and are otherwise indistinguishable from others coming from the Indian subcontinent. The Sikhs you see wearing an unshorn beard, turban, et al have been baptized and had their children baptized.

The stuff about fighting for justice and being soldiers of God though are all pretty accurate. Sikhs do have a cultural tradition of being badass fighters. More would join the US military if they relaxed the regs on turbans and beards. There is a lot of cultural/historical animosity between Sikhs and Muslims.

/Served in the military with a non-baptized, short haired, drinking and smoking Sikh
//Went to high school with a baptized, turban-wearing Sikh

Exactly. The antidote to speech you find abhorrent is more speech, not less.

I don't care if you find it blasphemous. We spent hundreds of years and hundreds of thousands of lives defending that right, so why don't you just man up, Nancy, and stop acting like some emo girl in junior high.

The Golden Temple is the holiest Sikh shrine "Freedom does not mean hurting the sentiments of others... This is not acceptable to us and we take a very strong objection for such a display."

More disturbingly on that second point: Right after the CBS memo scandal, there were some criticisms by the US gov. of Putin's handling of the Russian media, to which he responded, "Yeah, just like how you guys fired Dan Rather!"

Farking Valdimir Putin didn't even know that the US has independent media.
