I've never known anyone that can beat Contra with 3 lives, ever in my life. Don't really blame the devs.

I can understand that to an extent...games such as Gradius and Ghosts n' Goblins were ridiculously hard, to the point of insanity. But Contra on the other hand, while a fun game...was one of the easier ones Konami made. The only way Contra was made hard was when you'd fight your brothers to the death when they'd steal you spread upgrade while you ended up with the shiatty rapid fire.

In 1996 while I was living on campus at Virginia Tech, there were two guys in West AJ who would beat Contra without cheating when they got up. Every day. For a year.

My cousin and I were pretty decent on the side scrolling missions, but once we got to the 1st persony mode we'd always die screwing up jumps trying to avoid enemy fire.

It's not actually all that hard if you put a little dedication towards it. Back in my prime, I once played through twice (after you beat the game it starts over but gets harder) without a continue. It was finals in college, and I made a deal with myself that I could take a break from studying to play Contra until a continue. I got good enough at Contra that I could beat the game without a continue, and I ended up with a lot of B's.

I would lose my 1st life on the waterful......

Always played 2 player, 2nd person would lose there 1st and 2nd life shortly after the waterfull.

Back in my gaming heyday, I could beat Gradius III with one life. I still play it sometimes (Gradius V is a lot of fun and you get to keep your options when you die) but sadly my reflexes have dwindled over the years and I'm lucky to get halfway through anymore. Makes me feel old.

2 megabits of ROM? Luxury.

Back in the Atari 2600 days, you were lucky if they let you have 32 kilobits.

No frame buffer, only 2 3/8 single-color sprites to work with, and father used to beat you with his belt whilst you were debugging.

I always like to begin and end these threads with Evaccaneer Doom, the true final boss of Ketsui that can only be reached by the game with a single credit, not to mention that you're still playing for the highest score possible in this situation. Scares the hell out of most people, but there's stuff out there that makes Contra look like a freakin' cakewalk.

My brother "beat" that game (only the first time though) with no cheats or using an emulator.

I thought he was hardcore for that.

Got it in one. I've put so many codes in to let them do so many things. Always leave them in as long as multi isnt affected. Of course the code half the time is stopping the testing be meaningful but oh well.

2012-01-24 01:00:32 AM
there was a time when codes would form words, sometimes it was obvious but sometimes we needed a full chart like in the first Gex where the up arrow would mean Up or North and we should 'type' RUNNER and other things

Yep.

Had to hack together a game for school once for a school project. Was a blatant Pacman ripoff (we prefer the phrase "inspired by"). 15*15 maze. 5 enemies. Except that the final level had a 3*3 boss who could ignore walls, and on the highest difficulty could move faster than you. And since I sucked at AI, the AI was "Charge directly towards the player". Yep, cheat codes are awesome.

/Ended up being about 6000 lines that we threw together over a semester.
//Our CMOA was when the alpha was due on Friday, and we had a presentation on Monday, so we threw together all of multiplayer over the weekend and demoed it. Teacher was "WTF?"
///Of course, since we were flat-out done with 5 weeks left of the 8 week dev time, we just threw together random stuff for LOL's for the next 5 weeks. Like the aforementioned boss.

TMNT was way tougher than Contra. To hell with that underwater seaweed.

But I guess the absolute hardest game I ever beat without any cheat codes was Jackal. I was so proud of that accomplishment.

/And then I was ticked off at the crappy ending

I wrote a Pac-Man knockoff myself back in high school. It's called CerealMan! and you can still find the demo on Google.

Each level had unique pixel art and a new maze. I wanted to test it all in order which was challenging since Pac Mac isn't an easy game. But instead of adding cheats I added a secret flag to the configuration file.

To this day, I'm fairly certain that no one has ever beaten the full version of the game without cheating.
