Pirates, Ninjas, Secret Agents, Steampunk, Zombies, Magic, Fishing, Boat Building & Time Travel: Trackers PDX summer camps (new window)

My nine year old has been going to Trackers all year 'round for 5 years now and they are hands down the best out there. Last year's Mad Max Maude summer session was a real hit with my son. Every kid should get a chance to battle it out in the Thunderdome.

Dude, she's a flamer. Not into you.

Also, hellboy came up: I've watched the movies (live and animated) and enjoyed them a lot. The concept is good popcorn fun, and I enjoy the smartass main character motif. My other favorite comics are Deadpool (I know, super trendy and overused, but I find him amusing. I also like Ryan Reynolds.) and Hellblazer.

Is there a good point to start with the Hellboy comics? I find most comics intimidating to look at, since they usually have 50 years of backlog, and a lot of the 80-90's era stuff is cross-promotional etc.

you will honestly want to start at the beginning or you're going to be totally lost story wise. it's not like batman or x-men where you will have to wade through 30+ years of story, it's manageable and available in trade paperbacks. I've read them all and recommend them highly. also I would attend the hell out of this camp if they did an adult one with maybe some paintball combat thrown in.

Luckily Hellboy only has about 18 years of backlog.

I think you could start just about anywhere, but there are some continuing storylines throughout the series. For example, the initial "Beast of the Apocolypse" storyline is collected in books 1 - Seed of Destruction 2- Wake the Devil, and the last part of book 4 - The Right Hand of Doom.
The wiki article on Hellboy comics (new window) actually describes what is collected in each TPB pretty well. Some of the TPBs are a collection of 4-6 books from one storyline while some are a collection of various short stories and one offs.

BPRD on the other hand has a longer continuing storyline and is probably best read in order, but even in that series there are times where it jumps into side stories (especially early on like book 2). It mostly focuses on Abe, Johann and several other characters (many not in the movies yet), and Hellboy makes minimal appearences - when BPRD series started it was running concurrently with the separate Hellboy series.
The most current series is BPRD Hell On Earth which picks up after the major events in the BPRD series

If you're mostly interested in the character Hellboy, stick with the Hellboy TPBs. The BPRD series split off after what is collected in Hellboy Book #6 - The Conqueror Worm.
Book #1 - Seed of Destruction was the main inspiration for the first film. There is no comic book equivalent for the 2nd film.
