So what if a town that is likely predominantly Christian wants to place a symbol of their faith without using public funds and desire a mega-church. It's their right to be hypocrites if that's what it makes them.

If a largely Jewish town wants a Star of David or a largely Muslim town wants a crescent they can have it too.

The scary thing is, fundamentalists really do see themselves as a persecuted minority, and therefore they really do see this is a brave act. Keep in mind that to the fundamentalist mindset, anyone who isn't one of them is (however unintentionally) doing Satan's work. Atheists, Hindus, Muslims, even Catholics and moderate Christians, are all The Enemy. From that point of view, they ARE a minority, and all efforts to resist their Dominionist goals are an attack on their faith. I'm sure Darlene Kemp was completely earnest.

Let me give you one example: I lived in Nepal for a couple of years. At the time, the official state religion was Hinduism, and there were laws against proselytizing, but there were also plenty of Buddhists, Christians, and Muslims living out their faith openly without trouble. I visited a few stupas, mosques, and churches while I was there. They were all right out in the open, without any kind of harassment.

When I came back to the United States and visited a church here, however, I ran into a Christian missionary who was going around from church to church preaching about the "oppression" of Christians in Nepal. I don't think he was deliberately lying, I think he honestly believed what he said, but I know from first-hand experience that much of what he was saying was highly exaggerated when not absolutely false. (By actively proselytizing, he was breaking the law, and any "oppression" he personally encountered must have sprung from that.) But the people he talked to ate it up. It confirmed their worldview in which Christianity, the world over, is fighting a desperate battle for survival against a conspiring international majority of non-believers.

There was some study done about people's personal moral/ethical views and their interpretation of their religion's holy text. (It may have been specifically American Christians, but I don't recall the details.) There was an *cough* "amazing" correlation between the two, as if everyone's personal moral code was exactly derived from their own personal understanding of their holy text.

Or, possibly a more cynical person might say that they had their own moral code first, and then interpreted their holy texts in a way that justified what they already believed. But I trust we are not such cynics as to assume such a negative interpretation must be the correct one.
