la_cyberchicana: I was born in 1964, the year of the Wood Dragon. We're supposed to be innovative, creative and able to get along with everyone. I wish.

I am a metal rat
"Metal Rats are strong-willed individuals who are determined to get what they want, regardless of the cost. Intensively emotional, their behavior can border on extreme. Possessive feelings, envy and rage can cause problems. Relationships can be problematic as Metal Rats are obstinate".

What line of toys is that? I had that one as a kid and completely forgot about them. They had those thermal things that let you know what element they were or something.

They were called Battle Beasts. Though the one I posted is apparently a wood-bat, I don't think they have dragons.

I don't believe in luck. I know how it is to have one Chinese-born person tell me that the things I'm doing are good and bad luck... I'm not sure I'd do so well with 1.3 billion luck-centric people around me.

ooohhhh! You're receipt number 888, you will have good fortune, wife get pregnant!

China has a HUGE working population... now. BUT WHAT HAPPENS when they get old and it's time to retire? You have millions upon millions of chinese unable to work and getting benefits. And with the One Child policy reducing the number of the next generation, who's gonna pay for all those benefits?

30 years from now, the average chinese worker will be paying 70% of his income in taxes to support these old chinese, who will be literally filling the streets.

I don't think they have much in the way of benifits. But I'm sure that changing. The more immediate problem with the one child, very similar to what you are saying, is that there is one person supporting their parent and in some cases their grandparents. Very little disposable. A sister or a brother could of been very handy. But on the positives side, all the single men will be too busy working to be worried about dying single. BTW, when is Fark coming out with a Chinese version?

My retirement plan is to adopt some Chinese babies - feed and water them regularly - and raise them on a strict diet of computer programming and love.

ha-ha-guy: It's a rip off. One of my kids is a dragon baby and can't breath fire or anything. Total gip.

Uh... You mean your child is Reaganesque?

Chinese kids do so much better without love. The hole in their heart fills with knowledge.

"70% of [Chinese] women require house before marriage."

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2012-01/05/content_14386646.htm

And that "80 percent of single women believe only men who make more than 4,000 yuan($634) a month deserve to have a relationship with a woman" bit should be read with the understanding that the average college graduate in China won't be making that salary without a few years experience.

I really don't think their birth rate is going anywhere for quite a while.

What?
The only time my income ever came up on a date ... I knew to kick the woman to the curb. And any woman that thinks a man's current salary makes him more or less superior to another man, is a moron.

314/: Actually, given the shape of its population pyramid after so many years of the one-child policy, China might need those kids to take care of all the old people. China is going to be a very old country in 30 years.

I know...and all of their young women of child-bearing age will be living with their american gay and trans-gendered step parents!

\I mean that in the good way.

Knara: Mugato: WTF is a wood dragon? The first time he breathes fire, he's farked.

The Chinese Zodiac has 2 rotating phases. It rotates through the more well-known 12 animal signs every (duh) 12 years, but there's also 5 elements that it rotates through every time those 12 years rotate through. The elements, iirc, are wood, water, earth, metal and fire.

This means that your individual actual Chinese Zodaic animal sign only comes around once every 60 years.

And for what it's worth, women born in the year of the fiery horse are supposed to be COMPLETELY INSANE!!!

Anyone looking for an Earth Horse?

THE EARTH HORSE

Earth Horses are able to see situations from all angles and corners. They are relatively easygoing, preferring to determine each pro and con before making a final decision. Earth Horses work hard to accomplish goals they have set and would rather take longer to do an outstanding job than to work shorter and shave a little quality. They have great senses of humor and are extremely adaptable in most instances. Link (new window)

These things would be great morale boosters if I believed in such mumbo jumbo.

You obviously don't live in China where a girl won't go out with you without knowing your salary before your first date. Gold digging is culturally appropriate here, and you'd understand it a little better too if your parents had lived through "Cultural Revolution" in the 70s. Having food and a house are the most important things, who needs love.

/Favorite quote from a newspaper last year: "I'd rather cry in my husband's BMW than smile on my boyfriend's bicycle."

I have spent years living with international students (mostly Chinese) and it was very easy to trollface.jpg them. When they start asking about wage, work, house etc just innocently play along letting them get excited as the dollars add up in their mind, then drop a bomb:

"I think Japanese are the prettiest girls" or "I never finished high school" or even the trusty "My parents are both mentally ill"

Their faces are so readable that the insta-crash is pure gold to watch.

Interesting -- my Chinese-born friend is due two weeks after I am (we're both due in March). Wonder if I should ask her if she did it on purpose? I can't see her caring much one way or the other, but I'm betting her parents would be thrilled at having their grandkid born in a lucky year.

(My other two kids are a Wood Rooster and Earth Rat, which both sound like characters you'd find in a children's magazine. Somehow I imagine they'll manage to compete with a Water Dragon sibling).

They just don't register it for long.
